I personally would scrap it and buy a new shaft due to the fact that anytime you bend metal particularly stainless it is never as strong as it originally was..
That is just my opinion however.

How much is it bent?
"Trueing" a shaft is commonly done by prop shops, but judging by your question it sounds like it might be "out" more than a little bit...

If you can really buy a new Aquamet stainless 1-1/4" x 6' shaft for $375 please share your source?

Ain't that the truth!

Just how "bent" is the shaft? 1/4" on 6', I'd have it straightened, just make sure it's true when the shop says it's straight. Just make sure the shop that does the work puts a dial indicator on several points of the shaft to make sure the entire length is true.

Any more than 1/4"? At that price, buy 4!!!

Buy aquamet, not pure stainless.

The problem is that once a piece of steel bends and doesn't recover it has exceeded its elastic limit and will be weaker even if straightened. Unless the repair involves a serious heat treating, it should be replaced.

Explain in metalurgical terms...torsional force, shear force, moleculer structure and subsequent breakdown, etc...
