That's like asking, who makes the cheapest boat.

The question should be "what is the best value in a marine generator"? There are many manufacturers of recreational use marine gensets, only three of the are worth a crap.

You need to figure out what size you need, then decide if you want a good one or a POS. Once you commit to a size, then you can compare prices among the three brands.

When you are ready, ask "What is the best price on a 15K diesel genset" or what ever size or type you need. Then you will get a reasonable response.

Go ahead and tell us which three just in case one of us is thinking of installing a genset in his diesel boat.

I think for most folks, installing a genset in a boat is beyond a DIY job. You have to deal with fuel, bringing cooling water to the genset, getting rid of the cooling water, exhaust, and the electrical connections, both for starting, and for the output to the boat's electrical system.

A typical boat owner will contact authorized dealer/installers and get "installed" quotes.

That's true. On the other hand, if the poster really wanted to know, he would just do a web search on "marine generators".

I guess nobody had their coffee,, forgive them.

Ebay has a Miami vendor that seems competitive. Boats n Harbors always has a few dealers with specials and then there's the ole "call around" possibility. A friend of mine, who's a cummins dealer recently told me of leftover 9kw Onans for about 7 grand.

The phasor guys in Ft Lauderdale may sell to 'ya, the market is so weak. Also, Next Generation in Jacksonville is a good choice.

I just went through the drill back in February, shopping for a 9 kw to add as a secondary. I came to the conclusion, talking to owners and mechanics, that Norpro is the best value, followed closely by Phasor. Kubota, Yanmar or Isuzu engines are most favored, but the quality of the front end is as important, which is what put the Yanmar based NorPro slightly ahead of the Kubota based Phasor. Usually the best prices seem to be at the big boat shows. As other guys inferred, there are more costs than just the genset itself.

I agree, George, I bought a Norpro recently for the same reason.

Well, the OP hasn't been back, but he probably should have at least specified gasoline or diesel.

One of the generators on the boat I'm buying has 5260 hours on it ... it's an Onan.16KW original equipment ... The other generator is a Northern Lights 16KW with only 500 hours. Is it common to fix / rebuild / repair an older quality generator or is it common practice to simply replace.

I could add to this question with : on a 54 foot boat, what is the purpose of two generators ... is 16KW from one generator not enough to run fridge, AC, lights, hot water heater, desalinator, stovetop etc. or is the second for redundancy and not commonly used?

Do both generators generally feed a common bus or ... does each generator feed separate busses designed to handle "x" load with ... maybe a tie circuit in an emergency if one or the other fails?

The boat is a 1984 Bertram 54.

Jebus, I thought it was a simple question but I did leave alot out.
I need a small,4-5kw diesel genset that will be used to run A/c heat and a few small items. I don't like the idea of a single cylinder 3600 rpm too much noise.
northern lights but has to be at 50% load or better always
looked at a phasor in a mainship may try that .Quiet enough a little more on install and the speed is 2600 or 2800? i can't remember

i did do a search on marine generators. it brings up all the manufacterers and then you have to find a dealer then you call them they say the'll call you back....yada yada yada ...wonk wonk wonk......

i thought someone here would either sell generators or know someone

sorry i wasted your time

The least expensive Kohler 6kw diesel is the 6EOD which lists for $9,505.00 and can be bought for $7675.00 plus shipping. This is an 1800 rpm unit and comes with the digital controls and a 5 year warranty.

There are many more components you will need for the installation but this will get you the unit. You might find one leftover or used on the www but this is a fresh one right from Kohler. http://www.kohlerpower.com/marine/de...&prodnum=73461

PM me for more information.
