Anyone hear about this? Friend of mine heard that a 29-31 YF was fishing offshore, while grouper digging all of a sudden water came rushing in and swamped the transom. Boat was fully submerged in less than 30 sec. Luckly a boat was near by that spotted the bow pointing straight up before it sunk. Happened +/- 2 monthS ago. He had limited info on color/power. But it was a YF for sure. Anyone hear more about this? I myself find it tough to believe....But Stuff Happens
What would cause the boat to suddenly take on water? How would the YF fuel tanks contribute to the sinking
M guess is that they forgot the drain plug. They didn't realize it until they stopped to bottom fish. But even in that case the bildge pumps will be pushng more water out than is able to come in a 1/2"-3/4" hole..

It is possible that while they were bottom fishing they anchored up. After anchoring somehow they got the anchor line wrapped around the engines. Which possibly disabled the engines and maybe not. Either way with the anchor on the bottom sometimes it is set up hard or stuck. When the swell comes to "lift" up the transom of the boat the anchor line actually holds the transom down and allows water to be washed in the back of the boat. A couple repeats of that can get real serious real quick. I have seen this particular situation take down two center consoles.
Seriously though. I bet it was the gas tanks.

There are a shitload of boats that have sunk. It would not be surprising to hear of a Yellowfin/invincible sinking. Especially with all the hard core fishing they do. I have personally seen a seacraft and a fountain sink. Most of the time a boat sinks it is from human error. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to own a yf. It just takes money.
Hey, did anybody hear about that Everglades that sunk off Tampa with some football players in it? I think Everglades was trying to keep it hush so nobody hears about their boat sinking?

Yes. This was well documented. The anchor was stuck and they tied it off a stern cleat and gunned the motor......................2-3 large men in the stern when throttle was pulled back, stretched anchor line added with the weight pulled the stern under.
In this case they had no epirb and seas were forecasted to be building all day as a cold front approached. 30 miles off in a 21 powered by a single is a bad decision.
I always have a waterproof vhf on my belt when fishing.

Really stupid question I quess BUT given I don't know the answer I will ask away. Since I was a kid many years ago the Whaler adverts showed a boat cut in 3s with a person in each section floating. The point was to show how safe their boats were.
Today, so I understand, all boats (to a certain size) have foam flotation added which I quess serves multiple purposes but my assumption is the primary reason was to prevent the boat from sinkin beyond being awash. Can someone enlighten me on this topic.

Hope this is in line with the thread's topic.

under 20' uscg requirement for level floatation (not supposed to capsize). after that, falls under voluntary guidelines for nmma certification and abyc. check your manufacturer to see what type, if any, floatation they provide.
There is nothing online or listed in the Coast Guard Incident Investigation Reports. Give some data.
