Bought this B.O.A.T. in July. twin 2001 200hp Opti's-190 hrs
1st time out-right starter went out=rebuilt it.
2nd time out- left engine quit in thunderstorm=changed spark plugs & fuel filters
3rd time out- right throttle cable stretched=replaced controls and cables, changed to correct spark plugs and replaced one power pack.
Now, this past weekend. Headed offshore, engines sounded great (196 hrs.) We trolled a little, then ran a few miles, then drifted. I was excited that we were finally able to run back in w/ both motors.
Headed down the waterway and let her scream, then....lost RPM's in the left motor. It quit, so I cranked back up and let it idle for a few, but everytime I gave it throttle, it would shut off. Checked the fuel filter at home and it was clean. Cranked it up at home and it sounded fine at idle and I bumped it a couple of times.
So, anyone have an idea as to what might be wrong? Any info appreciated.

my buddy had a similar issue. turned out to be the coils would quit when they would get really hot and the motor would shut down.
how long will it idle for? will it only shut off under power or will it shut off on its own if you let it idle long enough?
We're thinking it probably is the coils. It may have quit during idling once, can't remember. But it definitely would quit when you increased throttle. Did replacing the coils help/fix the problem?

I assumed that the OP was interested in diagnosing and fixing his engines. Silly me, I didn't realize that this is instead a p#ssing contest on which company makes the best.

yea, we changed the powerpack and the coils tho, not just the coils.
Retards everywhere you go. If you were more east I would give a great tech to help you out. I have owned optis for a long time and not heard of that one. if you were not cutting off but running rough at higher speeds then I would have an idea.
I probably would hook up a 6 gal can that you know is good to be sure its not a supply problem, then go from there. Could be you are drawing air or something.
There are some good opti folks on here that can give you advice, I know propbender is very knowledgeable on them. Do a search....I'm not sure if the 2001 200's were a good model or not....sounds like they've been sitting for a while though....if that's the case, it might be a good idea when you have it in to have them serviced and looked over...and tweaked.....Also, if they've been sitting, it could be anything causing your issue from coils to injectors....over all , I like the optimaxes....oh yeah...make sure they have all of the updates available to them.
2001 is not the best time for the Opti. What you need to do is find out what if any updates have been done. Than basic troubleshooting for air and fuel pressure. What I am interested in is the crank sensor for one.
Make sure you are getting enough fuel into the VST.

Yeah thats along the lines I am thinking, I have seen an engine that was not getting enough fuel and it would start running bad at higher RPMs but not cut off. The first thing the tech is going to want to know is it a supply problem or motor problem.
Sounds like the boat sat and needs a good look over. It has also been my experience that a Merc or Evinrude/Johnson before 2004 is a piece of $hit. I and my friends have nothing but problems with these companies.
