I have a 89 Viking MY with a set of Mans v10 1100hp motors in her...she has 270 hours on the clock and they where put in back in 2004. Im having a realllly hard time getting her started when she is cold. they take like 3 minutes of cranking to get them to turn over and when they do, they sound horrible until they get some heat to them then they settle down and purr...is there something i should be doing?
Is this a non computerized mann? The new ones are practicly smokeless. I remember the large manns 15 years ago doing start up in the winter in jersey. Smoke every where. but not when its warm with no load. You might want to contact texas mann distributer.
If there are no heaters, you can get them installed. I just had heaters installed in my detroits where they warm and circulate the antifreeze throughout. Works great!
wow is it really only the that issue...its only like 55 degrees out...they have block heaters on them i will just plug them in..i really didnt think that were going to be necessary
I agree... block heaters are the answer. My detroits do the same when cold.

You really should be asking for prayer's owning Man's... Good luck and keep your check book handy.. As warm as it's been(you are right in your thinking) I seriously doubt block heaters will help. If they do they've got other isusses coming..

Guess you dont have much experience with Mans, the block heaters help on a 95 degree summer day with those older Mans.

i ran a Viking with manns that ended up being great. Only had the mechanic on to do the required major service. i think it was the 1000 hour service. Heat exchanger removed, ect...
Ran a boat with 3406 cats that turned out ugly. Had injector problems, port motor had to be rebuilt at 900 hours, just unlucky i guess. The cats smoked more than the manns.
The morning in October when I hauled my 31 Blackfin with Cummins 6BTA 370s, it was down to 45F. The egines have block heaters, of course I hadn't plugged them in.
Engines cranked a bit and fired right off.
TALK ABOUT SOME CLOUDS OF SMOKE!!!!

Yeah i have the 6btas in my Dusky. i dont care how long they havent been run. they start right up everytime and no smoke at all and they are almost 10 years old(knock on wood)
What color is the excessive smoke? White or black?
If it's white you are either too cold or have water getting into the cylinders or exaust. If it's black the you are probably dumping too much fuel or not enoug air in on start-up. Or worse, you have oil gettting into the cylinders when they sit.
White smoke is pretty much normal for a cold diesel start-up and usually goes away after a few minutes of warm-up. Black smoke otfen inbicates worn injectors or gasket leaks, restricted air flow or internal issues.
If you have long crank times at only 55 degrees then I'd think fuel delivery issues or air fuel mixture issues. Maybe fuel pump pressur, bad air intake or worn out injectors.
At any rate, I wouldn't mess with this too much longer.
Call Mann and find a good mechanic to get this checked out right away!
The small fix is likely a lot less cost than the big fix.
