If you can't find one this is what I have used and it works great and they are cheap. I keep them on the boat for the seperators and oil filters.

Talked with a Yamaha rep and he said there was a flyer he saw where you could buy one, anybody know where I could buy one?? My filter cup will not budge.
The strap wrench won't get the job done. Here is the latest wrench from Yamaha which our friend Andy from SIM can get for you.

http://www.yamaha-motor.com/outboard...temdetail.aspx

Even this wrench might not do it. Mine just tore the tangs loose from the filter cup. Ethanol is making the plastic swell so that it cannot be easily removed. After a month of airing out the cup went back to its normal size.

Gotta love the corn lobby.

Default Filter Wrench

I'm not sure if yours is the same but on mine I have to hold a clip open to turn the cup.

I bought the Strap Wrench set a few years ago from Walgreens, great for jar lids, Oil Filters and especially for Water Seperating Filter, but I would order the proper tool from SIM for that Filter Cup.

Watched my BIL remove his by hand, with a towel around it, mixed with the water in the bottom, was a lot of old Permatex....

He said the on previous removal, phase seperated 'water' would not float the ring.

On Monday I tried to get the fuel filter cup off my Yam F250 and, as usual, it wouldn't budge. I used the "special" three toothed wrench linked above and it was worthless. Just kept slipping out of the notches. Paid $25 for it...don't waste your money.
I took the whole fuel filter assembly off the motor, drained it and put it in the freezer overnight. This morning the cup popped right off by hand with no effort or tools needed. Changed the element and gasket and layed it on the workbench. In less than an hour the cup swelled back up and couldn't be removed.
My filter is the new "improved" version that Yamaha sent me last fall under warranty. So much for improvements.

To Free Barnacle...I wouldn't waste the money for the wrench. The freezer method works just fine. The filter assembly comes off in a few minutes. Four bolts, remove the fuel line from each side of the filter and disconnect the "water in fuel" alarm coupling if you have one. A bit of a pain in the azz just to change an element but it works.

One more vote for the Strap Wrench. They're really effective & easy to use.

Just did the filter change. Ended up having to use Jack's method... only 1.5 hours in the freezer. Came undone with great ease.

Thanks Jack!

Ha! Get this!!

After I got it apart via the freezer method, I cleaned it all, nice-a-nice... and set it to dry.

The friggin' plastic cup ("bowl") has swollen so much that you can't get it on the metal "top" more than 1-1/2 turns.

Which begs to ask... what the f*ck do you do if you're at sea and get water in there... there is NO way it'll come off...

Anyone?

P.S. I have the plastic cup back in the freezer to get it to shrink again... from there I'll put the new filter in and close it up. But seeing how I don't have a freezer on my boat, it seems like a non-serviceable part at sea! DOH! -- Yamaha!

^^^^^^ Good that you found this out now.

Beer cooler might help, but....

You just need a spare cup and 'O' Ring to go with your spare filter and keep the 'kit' on your boat.

Good ol Yamaha and close tolerances. My '86 Yamaha 90 locked up once, wouldn't turn. The teleflex cable had frozen in the housing. I did get it to release and Yamaha had a fix...they reamed out the tube of any motor having problems. Said the tolerances were just a little too close....

I broke one of those wrenches trying to get the plastic cup off my fuel filter.

You can buy better quality ones that might not break as easily. But not at Harbor Freight.

I don't know about the strap wrench, but I can tell you there is NO way it would have worked on mine -- it was STUCK.

To clarify are we talking about unscrewing/removing the water/fuel seperator? Doesn't the damn thing just unscrew from the connection? I just picked up a new seperator for my F150 thinking I can just unscrew the current one by hand...

I second the freezer method. I've had to change mine twice and that's the only way it would work. Just get yourself a supply of those little zip-ties to strap back on the fuel lines after your done.

I keep a rachet set on the boat. If you are on the water and have a problem, just remove the two bolts that release the filter from the bracket, clip the zip ties with the snips you have in your tackle box, pull the fuel lines and empty it. No need to unscrew the cup from the mount.

Next to rolls of duct tape, my favorite things are tip ties in various sizes.
