Default cleaning vinyl - post # 375

I've tried everything on a couple stain and nothing works...tried all the cleaners, bleach, acetone, mineral spirits, simple green, barkeepers and the like. Nothing seems to get out the black mold embedded deep in the pores of few bolsters.

Until I went back to bleach, cut strips of 2 inch wide towel and laid a soaked piece on the vinyl (yes, away from the stitching). Wait 5 min and it's gone.

Rinse with Dawn and the 2 coats of 303 to seal it...done

On the other hand, nothing is gonna fix this but replacement due to age:

Nice Glen!
Straight laundry bleach, not diluted?
What is 303?

(I have the same mold stain issues)

303 is the best stuff around for UV protection.

I've been using it on my various boats, vehicles and RV's for 20 years now.

Good stuff, Maynard!

And nice tip, Glen!

If you really want to see mildew disappear before your eyes, mix 1/3 bleach, 1/3 409, and 1/3 hot water together and pour on nasty mildew. It disappears RIGHT NOW!

Note that bleack will turn gel coat yellow, so be careful.
Oxy-Clean can damage some fabrics. It is actually a fairly powerful cleaner.

This has always worked wonders for me. IT has taken every thing I have ever tried it on out including what you were trying to do. Might take 2-3 applications but it will do it. I had it take an oil stain out of carpet that had been there for 10 years.

Its only like 5 buck a can too!

Try it. You will like it.

Birdman and I have discussed this in the past - we both own TENS of polishes, cleaners and single solution specific items in our dock box.

I'm sure the duragloss is a great product but why spend $8 for a can when I can use something that I already own that is in our laundry area. The idea of the post is to be effective, save money and more important, keep the amount cans/tins/bottles I own down to a minimum.

I have settled on (more or less):
woody wax - non skid, pipes, and non moving elelctrical connections
rejex - gloss FG and plexiglas
barkeepers - skid clean
303 - all plastic and vinyl
CRC656 - corrosion protection for electroincs/lubricant, reels,
acetone/mineral spirits - deep cleaning

bleach and toilet bowl cleaners are the two I get from my wife I don't have to buy that help a lot.

I like havng only 5-7 products to do the whole boat.

Whats happening with those black mildew spots is that the foam in the upholstery is wet and constantly causing mildew to grow from the inside out.

To remove it easier you can just spray it down with Tilex and let it sit for about 5 mins, then rinse. But it will always come back within a week or two as long at that foam inside is wet.

I was getting them bad just like that. When I took the coaming bolsters off to get the new upholstery done they weighed like 20 pounds each, and there is 5 of them. The newely upholstered bolsters weighed less than 10 pounds each.

I'm assuming your wife buys them so what's the difference?

Going back to your comment that nothing but replacement would work on some areas, there are dyes made for vinyl that have had good reviews. It's something you might want to consider.

I agree - but my bolsters are new (6 months) and use the flow thru foam...and tiles is good stuff I can get from my undersink.
