The point of running it AFTER the oil change is to check for LEAKS.

You're right. Not only for leaks at the oil filter but also at the onboard fuel filter and the boat mounted fuel/water separater which I also change when doing the oil.

Sooooo, pardon my hijack, but is it common for a motor to overheat when running it on earmuffs?

My 200hp Johnson (1998) set off the temp alarm last time I was doing this for a while in the driveway. It's never done it on the water. If it's a common issue, then WHY don't they make a better set of earmuffs to provide enough water???
