They are all "Good Motors"...

Yamaha, Suzuki, Mercury, Evenrude are all very good engines. People have their prefrences. If you want AMERICAN MADE go Mercury. Wanna support the japs Go Yami or Suzki, or If you say "eh" after each sentence buy an E-Tec....my .02

Default 25 hp

I believe all Mercury, Yamaha, Tohatsu and Nissan under 25 or 30HP are made by a company that used to be called Marubeni. It may be a part of Nissan now. It is too expensive by volume to make them by each individual mfgr.

What ever you buy make sure there are parts and service available in your area.

I bought a brand new 1970 140 hp Merc O/B that has been rebuilt twice and still running strong. I had a 1973 7.5 hp Mer O/B for about 15 years until I lend it to a friend that dropped it in 300 ft of water. I have a 4 Hp Merc that the grand children have swamped dump it at least a dozen times and still running. Two years ago bought a used Livingston 12 ft with a 2O hp Merc. So I guess you can say I prefer Merc. 2 strokes.

I tend to mix the oil on the heavy side which makes it smoke a little bit more and the spark plugs to foul quicker but I believe it has prolonged the live of the engines and coats them with an oil film. But parts and service are an important factor.

You better hurry.

You won't be able to buy a CARB 2 stroke for much longer.

Yami-cheap durable and light.

Those E-tec's look impressive but can you get one for $2200.00?

That's what I paid for my Yami

tohatsu are hard to find service, but if a service place will work on it near you, get it. I know many of those smaller engines that are bullet-proof. Pretty much anything that small is so much alike. Something you could do if you dont mind doing a little work to initially get it going, is getting a PRE-1980 OMC(evinrude/johnson) bulletproof, but theres not a whole lot of service available for them either.
