Default Johnson 175 Oceanrunner problems

While winterizing today I drained all the carbs after all else was complete. Trouble is, I stripped the top most brass screw (from the float bowl). I removed the screw and saw a bunch of black plastic which I cleaned out, but when I put the screw back in, it won't tighten--it just keeps turning!!

So now what? Is there any way to repair this or do I need to replace the float bowl. If bowl needs replacing does carb have to be removed? If so any tips would be appreciated!

Oh well that's a DIYer's life!! Funny thing is I've drained those carbs many times in the past and never had a problem!!

Second question is regarding lower unit. I drained out the gearcase oil and noted a tiny bit of water in the oil. Is this something that can be let go or should the unit be taken to a dealer for pressure test and seal replacement???

Thanks for any help!

Not trying to be a smarta$$, but why are you draining the carbs. I owned a 1996 Evinrude Oceanpro for 8 years and never drained the carbs when winterizing. I just injected the fogging solution through the little tube they have for that purpose and ran the engine until it shut off. This was after putting Stabil in the gas tank and running the boat around to mix it with the gas before fogging the engine.

I'm not sure about the float bowl, you may have to replace it but you may be able to get a slightly larger screw and put it in. If it's slightly larger, but not too big, the threads may hold it ok without having to have to replace the bowl.

As for the water in your lower unit oil, you might want to get it checked out. If you ran all year with only a slight bit of water, there is probably not a big problem, but it's never too early to head off a seal problem.

Pull the one carb...4 bolts and maybe one phillips head screw. Replace the bowl. It is only like $15........you will have to remove the old high speed jet and screw it into the new bowl....very easy job but make sure the oring between the carb body and the intake manifold stays in place.

Seal replacement's a cheapy, had one replaced a few years back on a 175 for ~$100 WITH the winterising.

Default Thanks all, especially Carbo!

Sounds like an easy removal! I'll get on it this weekend. I wasn't sure if I had to remove all the carbs to get to the one, but I'm glad just one needs to come out-- and thanks for the tip on the O-ring!
