Default 40 HP Merc-help!

Have a 1999 40 HP Merc 2 stroke. Cranked on the trailer yesterday and it wasn't idling very well, had to keep hitting the choke to keep her going. I took it to the lake this morning and it not only was still idling rough it wouldn't rev up in forward. I figured that it hadn't been run in a while and would eventually break loose but after about 20 minutes of putting around and having to start it a few times we finally just trailered it.

Gas is fresh, engine has very low hours, any suggestions?

BTW, no smart a$$ comments about it being a Merc.

Blockage of water or crud at the fuel pump gauze filter.

Cheers!

Also try running a can of sea-foam or other decarb in the tank... You might just need a good internal cleaning?

If I pulled the carbs and cleaned them it would never run again.

I agree with you and reelwork. Is there any spray I can use to put directly in the air intake or do I have to mix it into the fuel?

Sea-Foam makes a product called Deep-Creep and it's just Sea-Foam in an aerosol form.. Wroks like a champ and I'd recommend pulling the plugs and spraying into the cyliders as well as through the carb. Obviously you will need to spray into the carb with the motor running, but when spraying into the cylinders...

Go ahead and call me a wimp but I just dropped it off at the local mechanic. He said a couple of hours max. to clean the carbs. If you knew my mechanical aptitude you would agree that I just saved a bunch of money.

ROTFLMAO - that's one of the funniest, and most honest replies I have seen in a while.. Good luck and I hope your problems are remedied in short order.

Shag, good move. It could end up saving you the cost of a more expensive job.

reelwork and iron banks, I am the kind of "mechanic" that if I take something apart and put it back together enough times I have enough pieces left over to build another one.
