The checkpoint for convention center parking is also the entrance and checkpoint to the port.
Yes, security is quite tight.
This has been going on for a few years.
It's a very small inconvience for a very good reason.
You may have also noticed the presence of law enforcement with their 'sniffing dogs" attending the show and the area. There's also a lot that is unseen.
They're always polite and the measures are actually quite appreciated by most.

Boy the show sucked this year! Less than half the boats in the convention center and quite a few missing at the Bahia Mar.

I went with the intention of looking at a few boats to narrow down my desision for the new boat in the near future.

I was looking at CC boats in the 32-35' class with cuddy cabins. My target boats were the Scarab 35, Marlago 35, Marlin 35, Intrepid 32, Dakota 35.

The only one I saw was the Intrepid. None of the other boats mentioned were there. The only accomplishment was eliminating the 32 Intrepid from l]my list, the cabin is so small, much smaller than the one in my 30 Scarab. You have to be like 4' tall to lay down in it.

The laides were as hot as ever though!

I dont remember last year, but maybe Intrepid had more space this year cuz they had their tent at Bahia Mar AND about 4-5 boats in the water right next to the tent. Invincible was there for the first time with a lone 36. Seahunter was there but out in the water with a lone 40ft that the guys were setup their twin Garmins to watch football games in. SeaVee had their express and a 39 with forward seating in the water, as well as their indoor setup. The express had air conditioning so i spent alot of time on it. Very nice boat with quad 300's.

Yellowfin only had a 36, a 24 Bay that was gorgeous, and a small flats boat. The 36 had a Yam350, a Zuke 300, and a Verado 300. Yes you read that right. I was surprised at how much smaller the Yam350 was compared to other too. I always thought it was much bigger, but it almost the same size as the 300's. The 36 itself was a disappointment.....it had a small console with canvas top and white powder-coat that didnt look great. It just didnt look like their usual nice rigging that i expected. The coffin box was the only thing i liked. Being it had a small console, the coffin box was far back and the front of the bow was wide open with lots of room.......lots of room to attempt to land a fish over it which we know you need like a 12 ft gaff to do. That being said, the Invincible 36 looked a bit smaller than the YF while i was up at the bow of both. I forgot to bring my tape measure so i couldnt tell if it was just the feel of it, or if the size difference was real.

Just came back from the show. Yes, the CC was considerably smaller than in past - but traffic seemed ok. I am not really in the market right now, but the one boat that I wanted to see - the Albury 23 was not there - at least I did not see it. Every other year that I have been there - the Albury area was in the CC just make an immediate left after the main entrance - Yellowfin was there this year with their wrapped, 3 different engined boat.

Sea Vee is still my favorite of the "Super CCs" Was not able to spend enough time at Bahia Mar - in fact did not get to really look at any boats - or even stop by at Electronics Unlimited and say "Hi" to Glen - High Glen!. as it was HOTTTTTTT!!! and I had my 7 year old son with me. Just walking in and getting to the food court was overbearingly hot - not a cloud in the sky - the sun and heat was was brutal! - Autumn, where are you? All we did at Bahia Mar was have some lunch and walk down the dock with the Jarret bay, Spencer, etc turn at the Cabo display and walk back to terra firma down the dock with Hinckley, Venture, Jupiter, and the biggest Grady White I have ever seen - It was interesting looking, but at at that time my son was 15 feet ahead of me - towing his grandfather by the hand saying "lets go!"

I definitely noticed the show being smaller, but didn't think it was a lost cause. Understand the dissapointment though by people like chris who really wanted to do a side by side of specific models. Unfortunately didn't get to say hi to anyone from THT, only had a half day there and kept getting sidetracked by people I already knew. Be interesting to see how the Miami show goes!

Big R - send me an email. I'm in fort lauderdale and happy to let your buddy go for a ride and have a look at my 2 year old 23 sport if that's what he's looking at. Also was very happy with the guys at Davey marine - although ironically haven't taken the boat back since I picked it up. Anyway happy to chat about the hull if that's the model they're looking at.

Mike...Can understand for the port but come on....to get into the show? Give me a break...feel like i am living in the USSR..and no i don't feel any more safe. The bad guys are not going to go through the front door You practically have to strip to take a flight today and now you gotta show your photo id to go to a friggin boat show...maybe you feel it is a small inconvenience...i feel it is a bunch of BS

Agree 100%. We all need to just start saying "no" to this crap. It is totally ridiculous. Also, the driver of a car heading to park will probably have (should have) ID, but the passengers? When was the last time you and wife/girl whatever picked up another couple to go to movie or dinner, and asked, "you guys got your ID's?" This is TOTAL bullshit.

Oceanluvr and KeyPineSavage are absolutely right , that security check point was nothing more than harassment, a bunch of BS, and for us to get used to the many changes that are to come. I agree, the bad people are going to get in no matter what. I told my dad the same thing oceanluvr stated hear, the bad guys will just come in from the water. If people stop going because of all of the new BS the manufactures will have to put pressure and or stop participating at this show. The city of Fort Lauderdale will also lose a lot of revenue, which they are in no position to lose. I definitely will not be attending next years show (I need time to recuperate). Many of the manufacture that I wanted to see were not present. Out of all of the skiff builders only Hell's Bay was there, non of which I can afford nor am I willing to spend $2,500 a foot for a skiff. My family wanted to go back to the convention center and leave Bahia Mar because of the heat. They, not my family, wanted more for the soft drinks then what beer cost at the gas station. The bus lines were disorganized, nobody knew which bus to take and the staff was more confused than the attendees. They conduct this show every year yet they act like its the first one they have ever done, and to top it off the bus drivers wanted tips, which I never saw anyone give them. Sorry for this long negative post (it could easily be longer). I just had to vent.

Homeland security, Those magic words allow government agencies to claim more money.increase payrol, send people to learn how to fire a 50 caliber auto matic machine gun and point it at the innocent boater to justify claiming more money for their agency. One of my sons is involved in this. Only thing is, hes a 60 % disabled vet who can speak farsi middle eastern enough to get by, or help in his job. the other thing is, hes been shot at by AK47s,RPGs,Mortars, and almost blown up by a powerful IED that made the international news in 2003. He tells me most of these agencies are just wasting money to inflate their budget and also inflate their importance! Especially the Coast Guard ! Its a big game to get more money!$$$$$$$$$ greed$

Two different things going on here.
The entrance to the convention center and the port is a law enforcement issue and if no photo iD is shown, you will not be permitted to enter.
The issue of the photo ID at the convention center, the boat show, I agree with you 100%. I'm not giving my drivers license to some one to be scanned for marketing reasons, and that's what it is. I am not in disagreement with you at all as to that. But, it clearly says on the sign posted at the convention center that it is voluntary. Your not required to do it. I wont.
We dont disagree.

BLY,
The entrance to the convention center parking garage is also the entrance to port Everglades.
Yes, it is a Homeland Security issue. There is a checkpoint, photo ID'S must be shown and your also asked if any weapons are in the vehicle. Sometimes also the trunk is asked to be opened. If, for example, you have a weapons permit, and a weapon, you will not be admitted. I personally have no problem what so ever with the security issue.
The second issue goe's to a marketing issue that has nothing at all to do with security. It's clearly posted that this is voluntary, not required for admittance to the boat show. I have a lot of problem, personally, with that. I wont do it. I dont give out personal information that easy.
Two different issues, two different viewpoints that I have on the matter.

I still indulge in the nasty habit of smoking cigarettes, ok, I know it's dumb. The deputy a day or so ago asked me:
"Do you have any weapons in the vehicle other than the one you have in your hand?"

I enjoyed the show although agree with the above comments that it was much smaller then in years past. Many boat builders only took a few boats to the show whereas in years past had six or seven.

Of the manufactures I looked at Sea Vee had the most impressive display. No more 2+ year wait times and "retail" is what you pay.....period on Sea Vee's. They are now dealing and have "reduced" prices for the show to levels that appeared to be prior to 2005. You can get into a 29' Sea Vee, with a couple options including a t-top for $101k.

Other companies that had a solid display of boats included Jupiter which has every model they produce in-water. I was disappointed that Invincible had just one boat but, the one they brought was solid and the perfect boat for the show.

Steve.....I stumbled on the Albury in the water at the Bahia Mar. It was all alone amongst some larger crusier/yachts. My father even said..."what the hell is that little 23 footer doing in with all these big boats?"

I was impressed by the boats I did get a chance to look at but not impressed at all by the show itself. Had I known it was going to lack so many boats I wouldn't have gone.

Another sign of the times I guess.

Compared to how much smaller some of the others shows were this year, I don't think Ft. Lauderdale did too bad - I think there were more boats over 100' there than in 2007 (or 2008) and most of those are pre-owned (at that price level, used isn't the right term), not that many show visitors are in the market for those.
Suprisingly, lots of the high end mid size (28-35') sportfish manufacturers (Carolina Classic, Henriques, Topaz) were completely absent, and Luhrs, Rampage and Wellcraft had each had only 1 or 2 of their 2007 models there.

Not to belabor the point however for the record I did not enter Port Everglades where I understand they have a checkpoint. Rather I parked in the Eisenhower parking lot which is before entering the port and a rent a cop asked to see EVERYONES photo ID. I asked her what if my passengers did not have a photo ID and she said they would be denied entrance into this lot..go figure

That's a whole different issue.
No idea what that was all about?
Back to the issue of scanning DL licenses for at the show entrance, yes it was voluntary, but I had an issue with that also.
Sorry, I thought you were addressing the port entrance.

Rod,
That boat was built for the owner of Pro Marine and was built with the specific purpose of fishing SKA tournaments in mind. I spoke with Jim last night about the boat and he said it was unlike any 36 that Wiley has ever built.

Just wanted to give you a FYI for some of the differences you may have noticed!
