Planning on cruising up to the Morehead City/Beaufort area for a couple of days or so next week to get in some offshore time. Anyone have any suggestions or recommendations for a marina that accomodates transient boaters? Will need dockage for a 25ft power boat.
If you're going to stay on the boat, Beaufort Town Docks is really a no brainer. Quant town, all the restaurants, shops and so forth are right there. Plus courtesy cars to go to the bait store and grocery store.
We went last year, and I was originally attracted to Portside, but I'm real glad we stayed in Beaufort. Morehead City around Portside is basically a 4-lane highway. A little shy on ambiance.
We have stayed at Beaufort Town Docks several times. It's a little pricey (1.75/ft/night) but it's in the heart of downtown Beaufort, and has all new floating docks . Be sure to get there early on any holiday weekend or you might not get a space. Also, if you go out during the day, you may be in a different slip when you get back depending on how busy they are.
For dinner, I recommend Clawson's (try their crab dip appetizer). Haven't tried Beaufort Grocery but one of the locals recommended it to me.
The food at the Dockhouse is not good, fast, or cheap.
If you're staying on the boat, Beaufort docks probably is the best spot. When it's running, the current is significant at both Town docks and at Portside. Always a good idea to go in during slack tide, if it fits your plans.
