I'm moving to Seattle from Miami, yeah I know! I have 14 rods and reels to pack. I'm not concerned about the reels but am about the rods. Any suggestions on how to pack them so they're not damaged?
Andy
Ditto on the PVC. they make a lightweight version that works great...with standard end caps. The one I made has been on a ton of flights with no problems. Pick up some bubble wrap from a shipping store, cut it in strips and wrap the rods.

A few years ago I moved from Boston to Philadelphia. Like Menzies said, white PVC plumbing(don't use the thinner outdoor drainage tubes they can crack easier). Us a end cap on one end and on the other us a threaded clean out cap so you can use it again. I wraped the rods in brown paper so they wouldn't scratch. I could fit at least two in a 4" pipe except for my 130 rods, were only one per tube because of the larger rollers.
Go to your local tackle shop, ask them when the next big order is coming in. They will be glad to give you the empty packaging from the rods and reels.
One way is to go to Home Depot and buy a length of white PVC piping. Slip the rods in there and seal the ends. Chose the size and number you need.
I movedfrom Virginia to Florida and I used PODS. I packed my rods, sans reels, in 4" pcv pipe and wrapped them in bubble wrap. not so much as a scratch!
Back when I used to transport a dozen rods back'n'forth to Florida I used a piece of 6" PVC, glued cap on one end, screws holding on the other. Bunched/gathered 1/2 rods one way, 1/2 the other, preserved the tips that way, taped them together with blue tape and wrapped in rags.. Bungeed the tube to the trailer under the boat where I could see it in my rearview. Worked well...
Closed cell foam pool toys. I have used these things to pack and ship tons of stuff including fishing rods. You can get them at Wal Mart or Toys R Us for a buck. Some even have a hole in the center. Cut in slices long enough to fit between the guides and slit lengthwise. Tape around to hold closed. Use a solid one at the tip. Put them all in a double thick cardboard box and you are set. Noodles keep the rods away from the inside of the box. You will be fine. PVC pipe is great, but 14 rods is a lot of PVC pipe....................Good luck
