Default Mercury motor and battery question?

Question? A friend of mine just had a late model (2005 I think) Merc 90 hp 2-stroke rebuilt after 2 pistons went bad. When he picked the boat up, the mechanic told him not to use a deep cycle battery to crank the motor. He said it would blow some resistor or similar widget on the alternator and cause all kinds of problems. I have never heard this before and question the validity. Please enlighten me! Thanks.

They are really not designed for starting and it might cause a low voltage issue when the starter kicks in, I really see no reason not to use a starting battery
