Check the block for a round black and white decal. It will have some numbers on it. Those numbers, when added after the model prefix for a 2005 HPDI, with the shaft length letter designator thrown in between the prefix and the decal numbers, is the complete serial number for the motor. You can then call Yamaha and they can tell you the year and model.

I would be careful buying a motor without the serial number. The decal just does not fall off, ever. People tear them up taking them off, but they don't just come off on their own.

I agree - be very wary of one with a missing serial number. In most states it is a crime to possess an item with an altered or removed id mark such as this.

I've seen serial numbers on equipment get scratched when mounting or removing, but to totally be removed is another thing. If you are not sure, before buying I would have a dealer check the unit over to find the hidden serial numbers and verify it is not stolen before putting down any money.

I had a pair of Merc EFIs that were completely legit - luckily I had photos of the midsections from when I bought - because the serial number sticker on one of the engines literally flew off when a boatyard was pressure washing the boat for bottom paint.

Also had an older Mariner outboard where the sticker was there but the # was impossible to read.

Both had the # stamped (on a freeze plug I believe) inside the engine.
