Default Wind

I want to know why the wind dies down at night. Really. Why?

Primarily 2 things, although there are other factors..

1 - The sun's heating and nightime cooling, ever notice you normally get a West wind at night and an East wind in the morning? Wx systems can and will override this however...

2 - The daily rotation and seasonal shifts of Earth as the poles get more sunlight - i.e. Seasonal changes. The worst wx always seems to be during Fall and Spring. These are transitional seasons and cause the most problems weatherwise. That's why the middle of the summer and middle of the winter are *normally* pretty calm. Once the seasons begin to change, that's when the weather goes bonkers.. That's why February is one of the worst winter months because heat of the sun is starting to change the daily cycle and conversly, so is August/September with hurricanes.

As the land mass heats from the sun, the warm air rises and is replaced with the cooler air drawn in from the adjacent seas. On the East coast, the wind is drawn from tha Atlantic, in Texas if is drawn from the Southeast (Gulf), On the West coast, west from the Pacific. I guess in Florida they don't know if they're coming or going.

Didn't anyone else take meteorology in college or attend ground school for flight training? The wind here in Florida dies down at night because the people in Georgia go to bed. Everyone here knows that Georgia sucks!!!

Noticed an odd exception to the rule on the Cay Sal Bank (a large area of shallow water far from any real land between Cuba and Bimini). It would be flat all day, and the wind would just scream all night - then calm down again around 10:00 am. Still can't figure out why.

An old timer I fish with always tells me that if the wind is gonna pick up or die down it will happen at the tide change. From my observations he is right.... Anyone else hear of or notice this?

Yep. Again, has to do with heat, convection, and how the water warms the air.
