odd prop problem

I've got a stainless steel outboard prop on a 150.* It has a crack, and a small amount of bending on the back side of the prop, behind the hub, in the ring through which the exhaust goes through.* I have to replace the prop, I know.* I'm just curious what could have caused this.* The only thing I can think of is a piece of submerged debris I hit last year.* It didn't damage the blades though, seems very odd.*

Maybe it was defective from the get go?? A lot of stress is placed on a prop.
