PORTSMOUTH, Va. -- Boaters will be unable to rely on Global Positioning System equipment and possibly cell phones because of scheduled disruptions from Friday to Sunday that will affect mariners transiting the waters of North Carolina and parts of Florida.
GPS interference testing conducted during an exercise by the Department of Defense will make the GPS signal unreliable and may affect cell phone signals from about 50 to 60 miles off the coast of Cape Hatteras, N.C., and approximately 80 miles out between Jacksonville and Melbourne, Fla.
Disruptions along the North Carolina Coast will affect Albemarle Sound, Pamlico Sound and the Coastal North Carolina area from Currituck Beach Light to Cape Lookout and the IntraCoastal Waterways of North Carolina.
"The Coast Guard fully supports the efforts of the Department of Defense during this important exercise," said Rear Admiral Sally Brice-O'Hara, commander of the Fifth Coast Guard District. "But, we must get the word out to impacted mariners so they can take the necessary precautions to keep themselves safe during this busy boating season."
Mariners should not rely on GPS nor cell phones from June 11 to 20. Plan ahead and use VHF radios to communicate on the water. A cell phone is a good backup communications device, but out on the open water, it is no substitute for a VHF radio.

Columbus didn't have no GPS, and although I have read these posts and warnings, I will be headed offshore Sunday if seas permit. Thank God, I learned how to dead reckon and thank God for my old charts with headings to the Big Rock and all places in between. If it's nice Sunday, I'm heading out with my compass, and I know most others who read this will be doing the same. Technology is cool, but my brain and my chart never fail. Thanks for the heads up. Ah yes, Columbus was a much better mariner than I, and anyone who crosses the Atlantic in three small wooden boats, is ok in my book. I often wonder if he caught any dolphin or wahoo or tuna on the way over? I bet with the wind behind his back, he could have put out a killer spread ;}
I saw that earlier. We're going fidhing next week, heading down to Oregon Inlet on wednesday and hoping to fish through the weekend. Well, you know how it goes, head east to fish and west to go home. Its really not all that difficult. I can absolutly guarantee you that I have been fishing a lot more years off shore without GPS than I ever did with it, one more weekend isn't gonna hurt anything.
Yup, you are absolutely right. His intension was India and although some scholars still dispute his navigation skills; we all know he was considered one of the best at the time. Perhaps a bad analogy, but all I know is if a little land mass called North America was not in the way, he would have perhaps arrived at his intended destination. Some awesome reading about his voyage is enclosed. I still think I'll be fine. Thanks.
That none of you kept your LORAN-C receivers? Mine is alive and well and is used frequently. I have more LORAN numbers than I can ever possibly get back to and convert to Lat/Lon so my old LC-90II get quite a bit of use.
Dust off the chart, compass and parallel rules...........It ain't that hard to do!
Wish I could be there for the doin's at the Big Rock. Great tournament!
Good fishin' to all from a former Wilson/Morehead denizen.

I do have a loran, but a lot of guys don't anymore. Some use TDs converted from their GPS for lines of position. True, this is just an inconvince, but not at a good time.
We use to run 25-30 miles out with just a compass and a CB Radio back in the late 70's. Go out catch fish come home with gas to spare. GPS just makes it easier I'll be fishing regardless Saturday and Sunday with weather permitting. Fish are snappin and I'm goin..
It'll only bother the BR guys on Thursday anyway, due to the days/hours of downtime. Someone suggested taking Thursday as a lay day if no Loran on-board. Or else break out the charts and do it the old-fashioned way. My problem is, forget about set/drift... I couldn't run a straight line for
1-2 hours if I had to!
Ten US Navy Carriers
Now At Sea - Only Two In Port
USS Carl Vinson Has Gone Out
From Radwick
6-10-4
This brings the number of carriers over the horizon to 10.
This would prove to be a most COSTLY exercise if in fact this is ONLY an exercise.
OR,Are they all on emergency operational deployment???
Of the remaining 2 carriers only USS Nimitz is deployable as the USS Eisenhower is having its nuclear power plant refuelled and will be out of commission for several years.
Notice how the article says that the seven carriers deployed represent every carrier that is seaworthy. When in reality there are now 10 carriers at sea. Completely unprecedented.
Seven Carrier Strike Groups Underway for Exercise "Summer Pulse 04"
The seven aircraft carriers involved in "Summer Pulse 04" will include: the Norfolk-based USS George Washington CSG and the San Diego-based USS John C. Stennis CSG, both currently deployed, and Yokosuka, Japan-based USS Kitty Hawk. The Mayport, Fla.-based USS John F Kennedy CSG will begin a combined and joint exercise early this month, followed by a scheduled overseas deployment. The Norfolk-based USS Harry S. Truman CSG will conduct a scheduled training exercise followed by overseas pulse operations with the Norfolk-based USS Enterprise CSG, beginning early this month. USS Ronald Reagan will conduct operations in the U.S. Northern Command and U.S. Southern Command theaters during the ship's interfleet transfer from Norfolk, Va., to its Pacific Fleet homeport of San Diego.
The financial aspect http://www.safehaven.com/article-1597.htm begins with the Fed's addition to the money supply, "that has just been raised by crisis proportions, up another $46.8 billion, to maintain a stable currency. The Fed's actions mean they know what is about to happen. They are aware of a terrible, horrific imminent event. What could it be?"
It's been rumored that the Saudi's may be withdrawing their investment capital this weekend, and that the influx of capital, just added by the Fed is meant to offset this potentially destabilizing effect on our money supply. Pressure is being applied to the Saudi's to curtail the possible withdrawal of their investments. http://news.scotsman.com/latest.cfm?id=3014134
The actual collapse of some major Hedge Funds (1998) are also about to be revealed, and in tandem these two pressures might have caused this latest shift in financial policy. We may never know what it was, but something major will happen very soon to the world's money markets. http://www.rense.com/general53/catas.htm
As if this were not enough: On the 8th of June the G-8 will be holding their meeting on an island just off Georgia. That date will coincide with the financial collapse that's coming. This will be a summit meeting of the world's major industrial nations plus Russia. Massive demonstrations are expected.
Demonstrators in Georgia will be treated just like those in Miami, when people there attempted to protest the FTAA trade agreements, in November of 2003. http://www.benfrank.net/nuke/ftaa112..._in_Miami.html
The US government hijacked $8 million dollars from money voted for Iraq, to buy all the latest weapons for the Miami PD, in order to display an example of what will happen in all future confrontations here, between the police and civilian demonstrators. This time the Governor of Georgia has issued orders http://sf.indymedia.org/news/2004/05...68_comment.php
to, "shoot to kill" any suspicious people gathered there. To obtain the right to do this the governor had to declare a state of emergency surrounding the G-8 meeting. IF a financial collapse has happened or is imminent on June 8th, this "state of emergency" could be expanded and could make that day one of the worst in US history. These actions are in line with the domestic takeover of the US by the current leadership: http://inn.globalfreepress.com/modul...hp?storyid=355
Military operations are now in service to an unbelievable pact between religiously based fanatics and the power driven advocates of Empire, who together are planning to attempt to create Armageddon; in the Middle East. http://www.antiwar.com/justin/
The results of this madness, unless stopped, will destabilize the entire balance of military and political power on the planet. That would open the doorway to hell. This prospect is only just days beyond our coming financial quagmire.
Given that our aggressive military actions have failed in Iraq, and that we cannot sustain any kind of secure military re-supply lines for further actions in that theater of operations, the USA must not attempt to expand US military operations to include anything to do with Iran or Syria. Nor can we allow Israel to do this "for us."
This was this kind of flawed strategic thinking that insured the failures in Iraq, and we cannot over-extend the armed forces even further into new war zones where there will be even less chance of success. Both Syria and Iran not only have their own air forces, sophisticated missiles and weaponry, but they also have international allies that oppose us, in the Middle East * this alone could easily start WWIII.
Finally and perhaps most important there are some politically driven military movements afoot to add to our rapidly disintegrating world.
This begins with naval maneuvers worldwide: Memorial Day weekend, we launched seven of our twelve nuclear Carrier Strike Groups from the Atlantic fleet in Norfolk http://www.wavy.com/Global/story.asp?S=1902088
This was followed, by adding another Carrier Strike Group from San Diego. http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/m...rikegroup.html
The government is calling this a drill, but tying up eight of our twelve Carrier Groups and personnel in a classified "training exercise" is unprecedented.
Also: "why is it that nearly our entire naval fleet, have unprecedented orders to leave for the Oceans? AND, they aren't alone. At least parts of Iran, Britain, Australia, China, France, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Vietnam are going too. Makes me want to find out where the British Navy is holing up these days. And what of the Russians? Does anyone ever stay home and protect their own borders anymore?"
It was rumored that the planet was to have been struck three times within the next 30 days by an "anomaly." http://www.enterprisemission.com/_ar...lanetary_1.htm
This would have at least partially explained the ship movements from so many nations, even in this time of very overspent budgets. But all that's just been exposed as a hoax. http://www.rense.com/general53/hhx.htm That leaves us with nothing to justify the movement of all those ships, and military personnel, unless this is coming from those for whom everything must be SECRET.
Whatever is going on this month can't be good for those of us who can only keep going, toward the always-distant idea that this will one day come to an end. What will happen next week in Georgia, to the protestors, may tell us more than we want to know about the missing pieces in this dark puzzle that is our world now.
Something "unusual" or Cat Arse Trophic, is due tobe happening during June people - whether it's asteroids, hemmaroids, or nuclear terrorism a war with Nth korea or China or what - who knows - but somethings "up" thats for sure, and we will all find out soon enough is my best guess.
Seems tio be a few asteroids wizzin past a few places of late according to the press reports. Is the earth swinging on inot the path of the "oort cloud belt" as some astronomers have been claiming???
Giant blast believed to be meteor
11 June 2004
By BERNARD CARPINTER
A meteor entering Earth's atmosphere is the most likely explanation for a huge bang and flash of light that woke people all over Wairoa.
People reported what sounded like an explosion at 3.40am yesterday from Kotemaori, south of Wairoa, to Mahia Peninsula in the north and Lake Waikaremoana inland.
Sergeant Chris Flood said he slept through the bang but many people had been woken by it.
"The reports have come in from places probably 75 kilometres apart.
"It must have been one hell of an explosion."
Those who had been awake said they had seen light filling the sky, much brighter than lightning.
"It lit up everything, they said," Mr Flood said.
There had been no reports of damage.
A meteor seemed the most probable cause.
A Mahia resident said she had been woken by a big thud, followed by two or three smaller ones.
"I thought someone had hit our shed so I went and had a look but there was nothing there," she said.
The senior astronomer at the Carter Observatory in Wellington, Brian Carter, said he had received no reports of a meteor in the region.
June had been predicted to be a quiet month for meteor showers in New Zealand, but it was still possible for a single meteor to come in.
"It must have been something quite impressive," Mr Carter said.
The meteor could have exploded in the atmosphere, in which case none of it – or only very small parts of it – would have hit the ground.
Observatory astronomer Kay Leather said a meteor, which may be no larger than fist size, would cause a loud explosion and a light as bright as daylight.
The duty seismologist at the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences, Peter McGinty, said the institute had a station at Nuhaka, north of Wairoa, but it had recorded no tremors at that time.
That indicated that the meteor – assuming it was a meteor – must have burnt up in the atmosphere.
Meteor Was NOT A Hoax

Dramatic meteor over Seattle on June 3rd, 2004, at 02:40 hrs. (local).
Jeff,
I suspect you already have seen the news reports, but we had a very dramatic meteor (suspected) pass over Puget Sound this morning. The measured time of the event was 02:40 hrs. (Pacific) on Thursday morning, June 03, 2004.
The object was seen from Vancouver Island, and from multiple points on the Olympic Peninsula in western Washington. NUFORC has received approximately two dozen reports from eyewitnesses, including a few in Spokane, and from several in Oregon, as well, so it must have been quite high during the early portion of its entry into the atmosphere.
One witness in north Seattle reported that the event occurred in the northern sky, from his vantage point, and that he thinks it disappeared from his sight before it reached his location, i.e. it did not pass to the south of his position. The same witness, who described himself as an amateur astronomer, stated that he counted the elapsed time between the final flash and the rumbling he heard was approximately 10 seconds. Hence, the object may have reached to within approximately 2 miles of the Earth's surface, which is rather low, relative to most dramatic meteors. They usually either burn up, or fragment, at an altitude above 10 or 20 miles above ground level.
Many people apparently reported to news outlets in the Seattle area that they thought the object had "landed" near Centralia, WA, located on Interstate 5 about 110 miles south of Seattle. I suspect those reports may be the result of optical illusion, but time, and other reports, will give us a better idea on the groundtrack the object followed.
I thought your readers might like the facts surrounding the event. I suspect that it may make it into the national news today.
Sooo - are there any big asteroids headed our way???
Buggered if I know, but just in case - I'm figurin to make like Jethro (Clampett) says and
Quote:
Duck Yer Had Granny!
Cheers! (Oh yeah. anyone figurin to make a run fer it to higher ground, ahh - just leave the keys in the ignition of ya contender / regulator / Yellowfin / Pacific etc etc etc OK?
Really many are reading way too much into all of this . So what is someone trying to say that the G-8 summit will only meet a few hours per day every second or so day. Come on people these types of things have been going on for years and all of a sudden there a conspiracy, what a load of twadle
Facts yeah always get in the way of ah umm ah umm ah ah no better not say it here
Better yarn put the boat over DoT's scales this morning with all the gunna get serious with boat trailers in the next few weeks. So ya got any of that spare "hot air" then i'm in need of about half a ton's worth and she only has about 40 litres fuel a side at that so short someting like a ton. Doesn't surprise me really (I knew that) so looks like I'll have to wait for when the barometer is low otherwise all that extra air is going to really weight me down.
Yes - Those heavey haulage police (Mermaids) will get you every time!
Coulda been worse - they coulda got you while it was parked in ya backyard, like they got mine for having an expired license in it's slip!
Harbour Nazi's and Mermaids, whats the boating world commin too, I tell ya when they break down or are sinking - I think my 2 way will be on the blink that day!
