Question Boat Transport East Coast to West Coast?

Anybody got any ideas on shipping something like a Henriques 28 or a Carolina Classic 28 from the East Coast to the West Coast?

Who would I contact and what sort of cost would I be up for?

It can vary quite a bit, depending on what permits/escorts are required (which depend on beam/height). I would budget between $5-10K.

Btw, I'm in the Bay Area also. Shipped my Tiara 32 out here a few months ago, and now it's being shipped to MA.

You can bid it on uShip, but be very careful. Make sure you verify (not just see) DOT license, insurance, etc. And be particularly careful of a certain transporter that is well known for . . . let's just say pretty bad stuff. They go under multiple names. You'll figure it out.

Are you sure you want to buy a boat from the East Coast? Be careful of sun-burnt boats. And while certainly fewer, these boats definitely do exist on the West Coast.

I use uship. Just got a boat from south La to SC last week. Closed a deal to have 6 golf carts shipped today. They have a feedback system. I only use established shippers with good feedback records. I have shipped a few boats, a jeep, a couple of outboards and working on using them for golf carts too. Often time you will find someone headed your way empty willing to do the job for a very reasonable price. It also forces the shippers to bid against each other bringing the price down. Uship's fees are very high though. The bid I accepted today was $450 plus the $20 match fee. Of $470 total the shipper gets $390.

A few years ago, I found a carrier who was going light from close to where the boat I wanted to have shipped was located down to Florida a few hundred miles from my home. It cost slightly over $1 a mile--and I thought it was a bargin then. About the same size boat. I would figure on their trailer, about $3.00 a mile and be happy if less. Consider that you may have some lay up and loading charges on both ends, in some boats a flying bridge has to come off, and be sure and notify YOUR boat insurance company of the haul, so they will cover also.

I had my 28 Pursuit shipped FL to CA a year ago, during the worst of the gas prices. It was on its own trailer and cost $3800, with a shipper I found with uship.com. I was totally pleased with my shipper and the price.

Both those boats you named are bigger than mine, and if you have to use their trailer it would be quite a bit more.

I have had a look at a few boats on the West Coast and they all seem to be somewhat more expensive than the East Coast choices. Of course adding in the shipping cost will offset some of this, but I still think it is worth looking at options. Thanks for the feedback.

I ship boats all over the country often. I use primarily Sam Anderson from Clearwater Fla. He and his sons are the very dependable and experienced . Also can take care of all the permits required in all states and Canada too.

Well I got some quotes back and I was pleasantly surprised. For an East to West Coast shipment of a Henriques 28 it is < $7k all up.

I would expect it to be MUCH less than 7k. I just used uship and got a 28ft boat with no trailer from new york to new orleans for 1500.

I just got an email the other day that SeaTow now does long/short hauls over water or land of any size boat.. Since I trust them to take care of my when I break down I guess I would trust them with hauling my boat somewhere for me!

regular transporters are about $2/mile. Quotes from $5500-6200.

I just sent my 28' boat to Canada (3000 miles, Pensacola to Vancouver) and the cost was less than $3000 using a sheriff's deputy that does this on the side.

The quotes included dismantling and re-installation of the tower as well as the making of a cradle.
