Random Quote: If you lined all of the lawyers in the world from end to end, around the equator... it would be a good idea to leave them there.
They closed up shop and split. Their shop and their home are on the market right now. Nobody knows where they went to either. They left a pile of suppliers and workers unpaid and a bunch of clients with unfinished boats.
Several of his clients had to go down there and take their unfinished boats out of his yard. That lawsuit that you cited is just the first of many that are on their way. Turns out that they were in dire straights and using deposit money to try to get themselves out of the hole they were in. Just dug it deeper I guess.
It's a pretty sad deal. I know one of the guys that got his boat out of there a few weeks ago. He's been talking with a bunch of other Maxweld customers and they all got the shaft. That Homestretch lawsuit is just the start I'm afraid. There's a bunch of people talking to other lawyers right now and they're getting ready to file. Too bad, Maxweld built some nice boats in the past. Looks like the economy got the best of him.
HEBO - Six weeks after being named in a federal court complaint, the owners of Maxweld Boats have shut the doors and put their building up for sale.
Owned and operated by Andy and Debbie Heathershaw, Maxweld Boats has manufactured custom aluminum power catamarans for delivery worldwide. The business launched about nine years ago.
But recently, passersby noticed a "For Sale" sign outside Maxweld's headquarters on U.S. Highway 101 in Hebo.
The 7,288-square-foot building is listed with Lincoln City-based Mark Schults' Coast Property & Investment Realty, Inc., for $475,000. According to a Coast Property spokeswoman, the property has been listed since the beginning of September.
The $416,000 complaint against Maxweld was filed July 31 in the U.S. District Court of Oregon by Homestretch, LLC. Whether the complaint triggered Maxweld's closure is unknown; numerous attempts by the Headlight Herald to contact the Heathershaws have been unsuccessful
In the complaint, Homestretch, based in Gustavus, Alaska, alleges that Maxweld took two years longer than agreed in a contract signed in August 2006 to manufacture and deliver a vessel named Alaskan Legacy.
Homestretch also claims that Maxweld failed to retain a marine architect to prepare plans for construction of the boat and that when it eventually did retain an architect, it passed the cost on to Homestretch.
The Homestretch complaint also alleges a variety of mechanical and structural defects, a breach of contract stemming from Maxweld's refusal to transport the vessel at its own cost, and Maxweld's refusal to repair or replace the vessel.
Homestretch is seeking financial damages equal to its lost profits for the 2007, 2008 and 2009 summer fishing and tourist seasons in Glacier Bay National Park, where Alaskan Legacy was to be used, as well as $32,584 to cover the cost of leasing a replacement vessel for summer 2007 and spring 2009.
In a 2006 interview, Heathershaw said the business had made a name for itself nationally among those in the market for sport fishing charters, rough-water landing craft, and patrol and rescue boats.
At that point, he said, the business was building 10 to 12 boats annually, with price tags ranging from $200,000 to $600,000.
Twin-hull power catamarans are superior to traditional mono-hull boats in that they are remarkably stable, fast and fuel efficient, said Heathershaw.
Many of the boats produced by Maxweld had been purchased by sports fishing charter operators in Alaska, said Heathershaw said in 2006.
Those who track the Tillamook County economy and employment had nothing but praise for Maxweld up until as recently as last spring. At that time, Dave Lindstrom, supervisor of Tillamook Worksource Northwest Oregon, said, "In Tillamook County, we have Maxweld Boats. ... They ship all over the world and that makes them strong. They just don't have the job numbers yet
I saw that article too. I think there is much more to the story than was reported. It appears that a bunch of suppliers got left out on the street and also, there were a bunch of customers that never got their boats finished. Three guys had to go in there and take their boats out and have them shipped to other boat yards for completion and four boats were just left there unfinished. Maxweld hurt alot of people. This is just the first of many artciles that will be written on these folks I'm afraid.
There's another lawsuit against Maxweld Boats. Google Anderson v. Maxweld boats. This one is for more than $250,000.00. Charges include fraud against Andy and Debbie Heathershaw. I hear that the local county DA is investigating them as well. Doesn't look good for them at all.

Thanks for keeping us up to date. Ax to grind perhaps?

Ax to grind???? Not at all. I just thought it was relavent news to the original post in this thread. What's wrong with that? Isn't this a discussion board? What else should we discuss here...the weather?

All youve discussed here in your 5 (five) posts is Maxweld's demise, so I thought perhaps you were one who was suffering as a result of their closure. Do you have a boat in the yard? Do they owe you money? That kind of Ax is what I was referring to.
