Cool Trim gauge does not work!

Does anyone have a possible answer to why my trim gauge does not work? The power tilt/trim on the motor works fine but the gauge does not show proper position of the motor. Just annoying not a big problem.

1) What kind of motor?
2) Has it ever worked?

It's on a 50 mercury outboard (96) and has worked until about a year ago.

3) Do you need it??

On my last engine (Merc) I had a water pressure, trim gauge, volts, fuel, and tach. Since it was analog and the previous owner disconnect the oil system and alarm I replaced the trim gauge with a temp gauge. This way I knew if I had an overheat issue.

If your trim gauge is a separate gauge I would consider replacing it with something useful.

Thanks for the advice. I have changed the sending unit and same problem. I changed the gauge and still had the same problem. I was thinking maybe I wasn't getting a good ground but haven't had a chance to add a ground wire. I won't be able to do this for a couple of weeks as we gave the kids the cottage for the weekend, but would this be something I should do?

Saltwater eats the Mercury trim guage sending units at a rapid pace here in FL, even after being treated with Corrosion X, saltway rinse, and WD regularly. The last time I replaced mine, one did not immediately work because of a lose ground. After redoing the ground connection it worked fine.

My Merc sending unit gave up and the screws for it lock up so I ditched the trim gauge for a water pressure gauge. To trim I now use optical sensors (eyes), tach and steering feel.
