Glacier Bay 26' owner NEEDS help by Chicago. They are trapped due to a river closure!
Guys,
A fellow Glacier Bay owner is in the middle a huge 1000 + mile loop on their boat. You can read about their journey here. The are stuck near Chicago due to a river closure.. If anybody has a Cat trailer big enough to support a Glacier Bay 2680, this couple really could use your assistance! Perhaps a World Cat owner might be able to help as well.
Here is the scoop..
My wife and I are doing the Great Loop and have reached Chicago, IL. The Coast Guard and Corps of Eng have closed the Illinois River at Romeoville to study the migration of Asian carp. We had been told the river was to reopen today, however, we now are told it will be at least Sept 9. If we beilived that, we would wait it out, but that date is not cast in stone.
Does anyone know of a 26 ft Trailer for a GB and Tow vehicle, that can pick us up (we can make it to the public launch site in Alsip IL ) and transport us to Joliet, IL, a distance of 30 miles, bypassing the closed section. WE ARE WILLING TO PAY ANY FAIR AMOUNT!!!!!!!.
If you can be of assistance, or know someone that can, please contact Rick at 910-340-3373
There appears to be a fish barrier, which applies voltage on a grid to prevent Asian carp from running up the Chicago Sanitary canal. This appears to be the hold up. According to their blog, there may be a "solution' being towed thru this area--some in-convience and costs.
There is another option--and that is to go back into Lake Michigan and go to the Calumet river--this is the more common commercial route, which I believe is not obstructed. It means some back tracking, but better than being stuck. I am sure that the corp of engineers is not going to shut down all commerace into the great lakes.
The Great Loop is far more than 1000 miles--it is closer to 6,000 miles, depending on route.
Calumet Marine is a world cat dealer. They are about 30 miles from the center of Chicago. 708-862-2407 Maybe they can help
Thanks for the suggestion. They had their boat serviced at Calumet Marine. That may be a last ditch option. They used a WC trailer to get it in for service and it was a bit sketchy.

I passed your suggestion on to Rick. He cant get to the Calumet. The river is apparently closed as part of this study making it impossible to get to the Calumet.. It can be towed via the tow boat but its $600 for the tow.
You are correct on the travel distance being around 6000 miles.. That is one hell of a trip!
Thanks for the help and suggestions! I know Rick appreciates it!
Hmmm....if you have towboat or seatow, would this not be a possible use of their service? If you need a tow, you need a tow...
If they have blocked the river in Romeoville, there is no way around. There is a huge amount of barge traffic there. I cant believe they shut it down that long.

From what I understand, only one company has been approved to tow down the river during the survey and they are not sea tow or towboat authorized. Pretty crazy isn't it? Damn carp!
I was wrong, the closure is below where the Calmet/sag comes into the Ill River.
Here is a post from the Great Loop forum:
"Given the latest word from the COE and their "mission," let's hope
their testing of fiberglass hulled boats yields no hazzards.
Otherwise, it seems the only practical long term solution for diesel
boats will be to be towed through. Gas boats will have to be trucked
or go as deck cargo. And the red-flagged barges will have to unload
to trucks and go back for another load.
I think it will kill red-flag barge traffic through the area, and gas
powered Looper boats will disappear."
There are a number of diesel trawlers, as well as commercial vessels trapped there, and a protest is organized. Susposedly TV news (at least local?) will carry some of the information tonight???
That's all we need, is to shut down boating waterways because of invasive species. There is already a problem with Zebra Muscles.
We are using Elmos Auto Transport to take our C-Dory 25 from Riverdale Marina to Three Rivers Yacht Club in Channahon to bypass the closure on the Chicago Sanitary canal. We too are on the loop but are doing it in sections - we send our trailer ahead of the boat then leave the boat on the hard when work beckons. We are unlucky enough to be above the closure but fortunate to have the trailer at Riverdale.
If you find a trailer call Elmer at 815-791-0251, he is charging us $125 for the haul. Harry and Mary at Three Rivers in Channahon have also been most helpful. I know Elmer is also working on getting a trailer for at least four other boats trapped at Riverdale.
