Default 225/250/300 HP Outboard Motor Comparison (Quality)

OK- let's get some opinions. Not interested in speed, WOT rpm range, prop HP, weight, etc.

Just tell me which motor will be the most dependable. 2 stroke or 4 stroke, I don't care. I wanna keep it 5 or 6 years and put 2000 hours on it.

Yamaha Ox 66 EFI two stroke. Just add oil and gas and regular service. Your craft won't have the resale of an HDPI or Four stroke but you will get excellent reliability and great use from these motors.

Lowest HP to displacement will give you the best longevity with all other things being equal. It will also probably use a little more gas. Honda 3.3L 225 HP, 250 HP, Suzuki 3.6L, Yamaha HPDI 3.3L, 300 HP, Verado 2.6L 275 HP...in order from lowest HP to displacement...Honda and Suzuki are VERY close (within 1.5%). Honda has a longer track record, but so far I've yet to see a negative thing about the Suzukis as far as mainainence. As for performance, the Suzuki blows the doors off the Honda. Yamaha 300 HPDIs seem to be self destructing as fast as Yamaha makes them (do a search). Can't speak to the Verado, but it's a completely different (and very much untested) animal.

Let me get my popcorn so I can watch this debate for, oh, the 20 or 30th time ! Gee Wiz, try the Search function !!

2 stroke or 4 ?

Only 1 300 in the race so I guess Yamaha wins, right ?

The Verados have only been out for a couple of months, that sure proves a lot of durabilty !

Personally, I'm betting on, the yet to be released, big block Evinrude E-TEC. Lowest toal part count, and simplest direct injection method.

Gee oldwizzer- didn't realize you were the only person with original threads.

"2 stroke or 4 ?" I clearly say it doesn't matter.

"Only 1 300 in the race." I clearly say max speed and max power not of interest.

Why slash Verado's ?

E-Tech not available.

This is a completely useless and negative response.

Having a bad day ?
