Default 200 hpdi remote oil pump failure

was 30 miles offshore this past weekend and engine alarm came on, the oil pump for the remote tank crap out. Have to pour about 4 oz of oil every 8 miles in the reserve tank (inside cowling) to get home. Picked up a new oil pump today and the technician said they sold 4 in the last week. Is anyone having the same problem else where, and how often do you replace the inline oil filter and pump?

Had it happen to me last week. Turned out to be a clogged oil filter on the back of the tank. I just replaced them in April!
The Yamaha rep told me that the pumps last and usually don’t go bad.
I now keep a couple filters on the boat.

So the emergency switch would not fill the motor mounted tank?

No, all the emergency switch does is activate the pump in the remote oil tank. If that pump is dead, then....your pouring oil into the engine mounted tank to get home. Had our remote tank pump fail at around 400 hours. Was replaced, have 925 hours now and has been fine since.

Never had a pump go bad, but always keep a gallon of oil on board just in case

Replaced mine twice-once because crap clogged the filter & burned the motor(warranty) then corrosion got the next time

I keep 2 quarts in the boat at all times just in case-easier to pour when seas a rockin

you're right it's easier to pour with the quart than the gallon, good idea

Its always those little white micro filters on under the main oil tank
they clog very easy 20$ a piece every 100 hours.

That's definitely a possibility in most brands of outboards. The oil alarm is seldom able to truly determine if the engine is getting lubrication.

Yes but when the Oil tank on the motor gets low isn't the alarm supposed to sound. It is supposed to alarm while there is still oil in the tank on the motor. ....Mark
