Default Mercury 250 XS vs. 250 PRO XS

Can anyone tell me what the difference in performance would be between these two engines made by Mercury. The Pro model is made by mercury but the regular XS comes out of Mercury racing division. I also know that the racing models have stronger gear cases but what would be the difference between the actual performance on a boat?

One difference is no counter rotation on the Pro xs. Maybe motor mounts are different too.

I'd probably go over to screamandfly.com they probably have performance numbers with various boats that have ran both motors.

their site is down today for some reason, but it will be back up soon I'm sure.

Only difference I am aware of is that the Racing version has the option of different gearcases and solid motor mounts are standard. It should be noted that 25 and 30" shaft 250 XSs have been discontinued, if you need that length, you are limited to the production 250 Optimax or 250 ProXS. Plus, the ProXS comes with 5 years of warranty right now compared to 2 years on the XS.

More horsepower...it is always known Merc's have more than advertised but the ones coming out of the racing division are HOT! The gear cases are not only stronger, they are geared differently. As far as the counter rotation...there is a 38' TE Fountain here in the area that has quad 250's and I believe it has some units that are left hand rotation.

The Pro XS comes only with the TorqueMaster gearcase with a 1.75 ratio, XS is available with Fleet, Torque, or Sportmaster and 1.62 or 1.75 ratios.

Joey, when did they kill the 25" XS? Not good.

My '06's came with torque masters and my '08's came with Fleetmasters, but I couldn't really tell the diff just looking at them.

Most of the stuff on the XS and the Pro XS seems to be the same. I think I'd be tempted to follow Joey's advice and get the Pro with the 5 yr warranty. Hard to beat. I think they're a little quieter than the full XS too? Mine are QUITE loud! Especially when you have the trim bottomed out on those solid mounts.

Joey, how's the prices between the two compare?

Yep! Its my favorite engine on the market. Your boat would run great with a set. 2 mpg at 40 light and low-mid 60's top end
