The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council reminds anglers that the recreational season for Gulf red snapper closes at 12:01 a.m. August 15, 2009. The fishery will reopen June 1, 2010, the beginning of the 2010 federal recreational fishing season.
NOAA Fisheries Service is required to close the recreational red snapper fishery in federal waters when the quota is met or projected to be met. NOAA Fisheries Service has determined this action is necessary to prevent overfishing and to keep the recreational fishery from exceeding its quota during the 2009 fishing year. A detailed summary of the quota closure analysis can be found at: http://sero.nmfs.noaa.gov/.
The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council is one of eight regional fishery management councils established by the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act of 1976. The Council prepares fishery management plans designed to manage fishery resources in the Exclusive Economic Zone of the U.S. Gulf of Mexico.

You know........Funny how the other day, the only species I was able to very easily limit out on in 1 hour with 6 people was the endangered Red Snapper. Actually its not funny, its sad. The marine fisheries have no frigging clue what they are doing and we are paying the price for it along with their salaries. It was a challange to get through them to catch anything else. Sad, sad, sad...
the solution is to ban commercial fishing and shrimping. If you want a red snapper, go catch it. If you want shrimp, pull a small trawl. If you want one in a restraunt, they need to farm raise them, or import them from Vietnam.
I have seen hundreds of dead juvenile snapper discarded overboard from a single trawler pull, more than I could catch in a lifetime. Flipper also eats a significant amount of undersize that are thrown back by recreational fisherman.

I have been saying for years, Ban Shrimp trawlers and Long liners and the fish populations will thrive. I have no problem with commercial fishing but, these two methods are barbaric and should be outlawed. Ever since high fuel prices have driven most trawlers out of busines, the Red Snapper have become so thick its hard to catch anything but a Red Snapper.

If the trawlers were out of business, enough so to boost the snapper population, does it stand to reason that shrimp supply was/is low? Is that true? I dunno, just asking.

No because one of the other things that is beating up the trawlers is farm raising shrimp.
I have always thought the best thing to do was put the commercials and the rec fisherman on the same page - make the limit 10 per day for commercials and recs and let everyone sell their fish when they get back to the dock. I remember 40 years ago coming in from fishing on headboats in Florida there would be people waiting at the dock to buy your fish.
Yeah, where are those endangered ARS. We could not catch anything else on Wed. ARS rose over 50ft and ate every bait dropped. 6 guys fishing, limit in 20 mins.
