Default HELP, Any Ideas????

Two weeks ago I installed a Yamaha mini-10 micro fuel/water separator on my 2003 Yamaha 70 hp, 2-stroke. Up to that point, it had been running great, never a problem starting or staying on. After I installed the filter, I ran the motor in my driveway (on muffs) for about 10 - 12 minutes..............everything ran fine. A week later, I took the boat to the coast, backed it into the water and started it but it would not stay running. I pulled the boat, disconnected the filter and reinstalled the old fuel line. Boat started up and stayed running. A few hours later I went to start it up and it would not start. After about a 1/2 hour, it started and ran fine. It ran for nearly 2 hours the next day with no problems. Thinking maybe some "junk" got in the fuel line and and everything was fine, I hooked the fuel filter back up (with a new filter) and started the boat. It would start but not stay on. I put the old fuel line back on and now I have the same problem. It won't stay running. My problem is that I am supposed to take the family back to the coast in a week and no one in this area can even look at it for at least 2 weeks. Is there anything I can try that might get it running better again? I am fairly mechanical so and Ideas would be appreciated.

Sorry this is so long, I just wanted to provide as much info as I could.

Thanks

Make sure the fuel filter is full of fuel before replacing it on the spindle. Also be sure the filters arrow is pointing the correct direction. Fuel will only flow through it one way. Good luck.

I did fill the filter with gas before installing and the hoses are hooked up in the right direction. Now, even with the original fuel line (no filter), it still does not want to run properly. I am wondering if the new fuel line(s) or filter could have had something (foreign matter/object) in them that has gotten into a jet in a carb and is causing it to run poorly. I bought some carb cleaner and some Startron and I will give both of them a shot tonight.

You have a leak somewhere in your fuel line most likely. Air is getting in. Recheck all your fittings for leaks.

Yep, sounds like you have a leak letting air into your fuel line. Check all of your connections again.

I cleaned and re-gapped all plugs, sprayed the carbs with carb cleaner, added some Startron and got her started up. I tweaked the idle just a tad and it stayed running for 1-+ minutes. I shut her down and restarted her 3 more times with no problems. I am hoping I just had some junk in a line and all will be well. I'll know this weekend when I head to the coast. Think I'll stay inshore just to be sure. Thanks all.

Also...disconnect and reconnect the hose (edit...fuel line, wanted to make sure you didn't get it confused w/ the flushing hose) to the motor. I assume you have one of the quick connects on that motor.

For whatever reason, I have had this happen several times on different yamahas...using Yamaha lines. Sometimes they just don't make a good connection and restrict fuel flow.

Did you use teflon tape on the fuel fittings? It has a tendency to shred when screwing the fittings in and the slivers block jets and passageways in the fuel system. If that's the case, drop the float bowls and clean what you can reach.
