Default Suggestions......

Will be looking at a few used boats this weekend, what suggestions do you have for trying to determine the condition of the transom. I can handle wiring and gas tanks but not exactly sure how to test the transom properly. These boats will be in the water, I assume trim them up and see if the transom flexes but what other tricks do you guys have? Appreciate any responses........

If you can get to the inside of the transom you can tap on it with a plastic hammer or screwdriver handle and listen for delamination. Where it is dry and tight, it will have a clean and clear sound. Any delaminated areas will give you a dull thunk.

I agree with Kerno's advice; however you can do this simple test from the outside as well. Any dull or hollow sound should be suspect. Trim the motor up and try to move it side to side by hand and watch the transom closely to see any flexing or spider cracks that widen as you move the motor. While you are at it get on the deck and bounce all around looking for soft spots, particularly towards the motor and the helm. Good luck...

You need to use a leather hammer, metal is no good. Perhaps a plastic will work. That said, a transom can be in serious trouble even without delamination. You need to have a moisture test performed as well as a hammer test. If you are seriuos about the boat and it costs more than you are willing to throw away, there is no substitute for a marine surveyor.
