Volvo 280 DP Reverse Issue

Hope someone can help.
I have a 280DP connected to an older Diesel engine via driveshaft/jackshaft. While slow going to dock, I put it into reverse and it did not catch. I had to come back to neutral and then put it back in reverse and it finally caught. Where should I start to look for an issue? It happened twice recently.

Also how much side to side play should there be in the drive when it is on a trailer? My 280DP can be moved about 1-2 inches side to side and I am wondering if that looseness will affect steering while underway.
