Default Yamaha Oil Leak?

I went to look at the boat today and saw a small amount of oil on the engine (2003 Yamaha 200 HPDI). It is kept tilted about 1/4 way up. The red arrow is pointing to the area where it appears to be coming from. the area is just above the fin on the front of the engine. The boat has been sitting for 2 weeks.

Any ideas about what is going on? Sorry for the cell phone picture.

Have you checked the oil tank inside the housing. Those caps are not the tightest fitting and oil has a way of draining out and down...good luck, I know this is your new boat, and after all the hassels with your old one you don't need anything major...

I agree, take a look at the secondary oil tank under the cowel and see if you see oil on its sides. The cap is a press fit, no gasket and is prone to leakage when the motor is tilted up. I had this problem for two years. Thus year I pulled the cap/sender and just wiped everything with arag including the opening of the tank. So far , no oil drip. Who wudda thunk..

I'll check the secondary tank tomorrow. Would this type of leak seep down internally? I didn't see any oil higher up, but it was over 100 degrees and I was at the boat to get a few measurements.

Here is a better picture of where I saw the oil. It is greenish-blue in color and sure looks like Yamalube. The puddle on the ground is unrelated. There was no other oil anywhere on the leg of the motor. When I looked under the cowling it was hard to tell if there was oil present. The prior owner had applied a very heavy dose of some type of protectant. I cleaned it up and lowered the engine quite a bit. The cap on the reservoir was pretty loose and I'm hoping this is the source. I'll check back in a few days and see if there is more oil.

Would it make sense that this is where I would see oil if it were leaking under the cowling?

How do you guys have a zip tie attached to the cap? Do you have it over the top holding it down?

If its the black rubber cap on the internal tank leaking, push the cap down good, then put a zip tie around it (about 1/3 of the way from the top) and tighten it down. It fixed mine for good.

Default Oil Leak on HPDI

I'm no mechanic, but my 05 200 Yamaha HPDI had the exact samrr problem. It wasn't as simple as a loose oil cap. It was bad and/or improperly installed crank case seals. According to my mechanic, it is a major job to fix (~15 hr job, plus parts). Luckily I was covered under a Yamaha extended warranty. I hope yours is still valid. If not OUCH!!!

My Ox66 does this as well. My problem is with the silencer. The silencer has a small crack in the seem. The oil will flow through the holes in the sump then down the leg. I keep mine in a tilted position where it won't run out of the holes and just wipe the oil out of the sump after it has sat for a couple of days. I'll fix it someday.

Had a very similar leak on my 2003 225 VMAX HPDI. When I took it in for the oil pump "update" they replaced the power head. When they pulled the power head they found that the plate between the powerhead and lower case was cracked. Luckily for me it was only around $500 in parts/labor since Yamaha was picking up the tab for the new power head install anyway. Hope this isn't your issue.
