Default Leaning post split -probably due to ice expansion?

I have a very nice Birdsall leaning post. The bar that keeps the cooler from sliding into the drivers feet has a 1.5 inch split in it. It is not at the weld and is on the top of the pipe. I guess that the big stansion filled up with water enough to fill the horizontal pipe and it split over the winter. I have no idea how the water got in there. In addition, I have zero desire to remove the whole leaning post and have it welded (at least right now).

2 questions:

Is there an epoxy or like product to seal the split ? Or should I just take duct tape and put it over the hole.

ANyone else have this problem? SHould I drill holes in the legs for water to drain?

Thanks.

I had my hard top legs do the same thing. Top was made in Florida, guess they never heard about ice. Anyway, I had it welded on the boat (in water, at the marina) for about $250 bucks and then I drilled some small 1/8 drain holes, never had another problem.

Same thing happened to me. Water filled in the t top leg and popped the bottom weld.

Need less to say all t top and leaning post legs got holes drilled in them to keep it from happening again.
