I'm thinking of replacing my floundering lantern with an underwater light...you know the kind with the sealed light on the end of a pole that you walk with..but do not know anyone who has used this kind. I'm concerned the underwater light won't give as much coverage as the lantern but I cannot find a lantern like I used as a kid, with a glass globe around the mantles. The only kind they sell now are the ones with the mantles exposed.
Anyone have any experience with the sealed underwater lights? Any and all comments appreciated.
I've used the sealed underwater lights and like them much better than the laterns. With the light underwater you don't get the reflection that you do with an above water light.
Been full circle and make mine now. Q-Beam bulb mounted inside a Mason jar sealed to 3/4" pvc pipe. Works great and usually lasts 2 years. I'm in a jon boat and not wading.

Reason: Not pictured is a block of foam above the jar. It floats and then slides the pipe inside the mount.
I don't see why you couldn't use one of Scarabchris' underwater LED lights. Maybe even mount it on a piece of marine plywood an inch or so larger than the light, put it on the end of a pole, pointed down. The light wouldn't be in your eyes because of the oversized plywood. And it should last a lot longer than any type of light bulb. I've been toying with the idea of doing this for a few weeks now.
Call Ed Currie at 228 864-5545 Ken's Mrine Supply. There is a fellow in Gulfport that makes them out of a sealed beam headlight, PVC and a motorcycle battery.
Pretty cheap, light and effective.

are these for walking or just boats? when I was a kid I walked the shallows with an inner tube and galvanized tub in the middle, ice bag, auto battery and sealed beam light. Yeah, times have changed, but I can't afford a boat to go floundering in. Any way to configure them so you could walk somehow?
Thanks CapnDean. I'll be in Gulfport tomorrow and might get a chance to go by. At least I'll call him.
Seel1005, yeah, this is wading along the shore at low tide. Best time in the world. I remember once night with six buddies in high school. Left the ice chest and split into two groups. Got back about 1:30 and between us we had 225 softshells! Great night and great memories.
dman, any way you can expand your approach a bit? FL panhandle here, nothing like further west, much better where you are. what do you use for a float, fish bucket, batteries, etc? Are there commercial products available or is it all custom?
I bought the pvc and sealed beam light from academy last year. It didn't work too great. I know there is someone who makes a brighter light with the same setup (halogen, maybe). I'll be looking to go in another direction. Does Coleman still make the lantern with the big round reflector? It was heavy, but worked really well. I open for suggestions myself on something better.
passchristian...I can't find the lantern with the glass globe like I had when I was a kid. I guess they don't make them anymore. It really helped on windy nights. Thanks for the infor about the Academy light. They were out of the pvc type yesterday but had another one on a metal pole. I did not see the type of power.
I did see one on a site that advertised halogen bulbs on a pole powered by two or three AA bateries. They sell for $90.00 but I haven't found anyone who has used one, just the company's website.
sel1005..there are plenty of commercial products available. I bought a Coleman type lantern at Academy Sports that uses the old type mantle..the kind you light and the ashes stay in place to provide the light. The only problem is that hight wind or bumps to the light can damage or destroy the mantles and you have to replace them. Hard to do on a windy night. As far as floats, I typically just bring a bucket when soft shelling and a stringer when floundering.
