Took the cover off the boat for the first time this year. Put the batteries in (kept them charged all winter). Turned the key, and just got 1 click sound each time I turned the key to the start position. Batteries are fully charged. Is it the starter? I lightly tapped it to see if it would crank, but no luck. Suggestions? Arrgghhh, I do not want to bring in to the dealer.
Glad to talk to someone about this besides my wife who could live without the boat. Went back out there and the starter gear pops up, then just clicks. No, I didn't clean the posts. The cables are on the screw down posts, and I snugged them down with pliers. Is it lack of power on the battery end? I may run out and get 2 new batteries. The existing batteries charged fine though.
New batteries and still no crank, just clicks. Should I remove the starter and bring it somplace to get it checked out? Is this something I can do myself, i.e bolt on operation? Where do I get a new starter, I think the one on there is Hitachi. Thanks
Check and double check all the connections... and make sure
all the wires are hooked up... while switching batteries out
several years ago... failed to reconnect one of the bazillion wires
on the batteries... and same result.. starter would pop up but would
not engage.....or spin..... found the wire when the sun came up...
presto... running motor.
Pull spark plugs out and try turning the engine over by hand.**
If all is ok try starting. Feel the starter motor....warm? Starter motor could be bad. Pull starter off and bench test the starter motor.

New batteries. Starter gear pops up and all I get is click, click click, click............ Cable connections consists of 1 pos per battery and a neg cable going from battery to battery with one other neg wire to one of the batteries.
Damn, I feel stupid. Missed a cable. I would have never thought that I would get the starter to engage, but not crank if the neg cable was not connected. I would think the starter would do nothing but sit there. The cable end was hiding behind battery #2. You guys are good. Captains club membership pays off again. Too much turkey hunting this year. Those 3:30 AM mornings have about killed me. Glad it's over so I can start catching fish.
yea some starters, like the automotive ones need power to engage the "bendix" via a magnitized coil. and then it also need power to go to spin up the starter.....
the starter in my outboard just relies on the spining motion to engage it...
Glad to hear you found the problem. With the F115 being so trouble free, us owners are prone to careless mistakes now and then. My battery terminals were dirty when I tried to fire her up this spring- THT members helped me diagnose in 5 minutes and I was good to go again.
