Default Trick to taking off Yamaha 704 remote cover

I've taken off the 704 remote cover twice, once to adjust tension and once to adjust throttle. Can one of you old timers tell me if there is a trick and what is the appropriate tool to get the cover off after taking out the four screws??

On a related subject, where is the best place to buy a new cover and screws for the 704 remote?

Any advice appreciated.

you need to somewhat pinch the cover as to release the 4 securing tabs. as long as the 4 screws do their jobs the tabs could probably be ground/cut off.

as for screws either your local dealer or they could be tapped to a more common standard thread.

Thanks for the quick response wetneck. I like the idea of getting rid of the tabs. I also need a new cover, as the one I have looks awful where the plastic broke off around the four tab holes.

I will need to tap out for the one screw that broke off (corroded in the hole), and maybe another hole since I managed to loose the screw I took to the hardware store to find a replacement.

I'm getting good at turning five minute jobs into multi-day jobs. Thanks again for your advise.

The older style is a b!tch.

The newer ones (non command link) are hooked on the front and two screws on the back covered by a little rubber piece. You can also adjust the tension under that piece without removing the cover.

Really a great improvement on the 704.

Wetneck, which was do you pinch it? Pinch in on the two sides?

the brackets come off the 704 and im sure they can be purchased, just 2 side phillip screws, in case you cant tap the old out.

i havent taken mine off recently but the screws are front and back, tabs would be sides , so pinch front to back , after removing screws.

havent gotten to play with the new model yet, pissed as i missed a new double binnacle on ebay for $175...seller stopped auction.
