Default Ficht wont start

My 1999 evinrude ficht has been running fine. now out of the blue it wont start.

when i try and turn it over the starter is spinning, but its not grabbing the flywheel. i sprayed the gears and there is nothing stuck. my batteries are also fully charged

what can this be?????

If you can take the starter out yourself, do so and take it to your local auto-starter/alternator rebuilder instead of to the boatyard (who will charge you a premium to send it to the same rebuilder).

Depending on your shop and situation you should have it back in a day or so. And I agree it sounds like the bendix which pushes the gear up to engage the flywheel. Shouldn't be expensive.

I had a similar problem that was caused by spraying the starter with WD40. After I cleaned the bendix with alcohol and dried it out it worked fine. My mechanic told me that the starter motor should never be over lubricated.
