Default Mounting a 10" screen on a 8" Electronics Box

I purchases a GPS with a 10.4" screen. I'd like to put it in close in the electronic box that currently houses my 5" display and make it work for a larger display. I was wondering if anybody has done this, and how, and could share a picture or two.

On my GW 272 Sailfish (hated it!) we removed the door on the lower electronics box, cut the top side of the opening to enlarge it and used 1/2" black starboard to make a panel for flush mounting electronic displays. That might give you enough height to mount your 10.4" chartplotter.

Sorry no pictures as this was done long before there were cameras or the interweb.

I have done the same thing as Onewolf. Seems to work out good.

That was kind of what I was thinking but I'm a tad afraid of cutting into the fiberglass and screwing it up. Did you remove material from just the face, or did you actually cut into the top of the box by the depth of the recess the door fits into

Onewolf. why did you hate the Sailfish?

Regards,
Dave

I did the same with the Starboard. I didn't need to cut into the fiberglass because the back of the 10" screen is actually much smaller. Look at the mounting instructions for your 10" and you may find that the size is all up front. Mine was only about 7" diagonal on the bcakside.

Try it with a cheap piece of plywood first. Cut it out for your new unit and test fit it by holding it over the existing opening. I ended up with more room than I thought.

i have a 2010c mounted on a gulfstream just outside of the helm electronic box. i used a ram mount with a short arm attached to the bailmount. the ball is secured inside of the box about 5 inches in. i leave the bailmount attached and remove the headunit when i leave the boat. i don't have a pic but imagine your unit just outside of the box and centered. i'm also able to drop the top of the box front (the black plastic) so i have a clear sightline to the bow. the ram mounts are great. i also have a ray c80 with a double articulated arm coming off the side of the box and dropped down level with the 2010c (comes off right from where your ff is). you should look into it.

Compared to all my other offshore boats, the ride of the Sailfish was terrible in anything bigger than 2' seas. When trying to head straight into 3+ foot chop it either wanted to go too fast and slam the crud out of us or it would bog down and not stay on plane. Knowing what I know _now_ I would have tried 4 bladed props to see if it would have helped the slow planing speed cabability. I believe the model year after mine (1998+) Grady extended the hull running surface all the way to the transom in large part to resolve the slow speed planing 'issue' (and renamed it the 282 Sailfish). I remember several times on Bahamas trips when I was trying to keep up with my buddies in deep V center consoles and they would be cruising merrily along and we would be having the shiat beat out us.

Comfort wise running into a head sea there's no comparison between our current Pursuit 3070 and the Sailfish 272. (Of course the Pursuit is 2' longer and 4000 lbs heavier!)

I had the same problem / issue. With my eyes getting older, I wanted large screen sizes so I could see without wearing my glasses. The pictures below show what I did. I removed the lid, and installed my electronics. We like what we have.

The first picture is factory stock view. The second is after our mods were complete.
