One of my buddies was sick and tired of our rods/reels bouncing around in the back of the truck while we were headed to the beach. We had talked about buying some rod holders to mount in the back of the truck, but once we started looking around we found the prices to be kind of high for the amount of rods that could be carried by most of the set ups that were offered. Not to be discouraged, we decided to do a little value engineering. We wanted to have something that would interchange easily between both of our trucks(F250 and F150). He started coming up with ideas and finally decided on one that he thought might work. The finished product will carry 15 rods/reels. As you can see in the photos, it is big enough to carry 50's/30's pretty easily.
While it might not be as flashy as some of the stainless ones you see going down the road, I think it will serve it's purpose handily.
I only ask why did you not build in some sort of theft prevention? It wouldn't take a dirt ball long to grab a few and screw while you were getting ice, bait, or whatever.
It's clearly better than letting expensive gear bounce around the back of a truck. I never could figure that one out when I see it.

I've never been a racist. I don't like the white half either.
Looks nice, we made one as well but it bolts to the underside of the toolbox and will swivel to the angle you want the rods to ride. we also made a locking device with some coated cable. i will try to get some pics sometime this week. The locking device looks like it will work with your design, very nice!!!!!!!

I got one made from aluminum and it bolted directly to my tool box. I am about to have an extension made for it as well to carry more rods. I got mine custom done to have atab on either side so I could run a cable through each reel and lock them in. It will only keep the honest thief from taking them anyways. They aren't overly expensive either considering the cost of materials and time, mine was only $185.00 and worth every penny. I have carried 50's and 80's with no problem.

It is for travel only. They will not be left unattended for long. There are usually 3 or 4 of us that go together so somebody usually stays around the truck whenever we stop. However, if somebody wanted them bad enough I guess they could get them. I have heard stories of people jumping in the back of boats at red lights in SOFLA to grab rods out of the leaning post. Without sounding too naive, the places we fish seem to be pretty safe. It is not uncommon to see rods/gear/SSI's and icey tecks laying around in the back of peoples trucks.
This is a buddy of mines...I have an identical holder that will be done tomorrow but we used a weather proof black paint on it instead of the outdoor carpet. Unbolts easy from the truck when not in use. Whole thing cost under $150 to build.

Mine is just like that, but I used 3/4" treated plywood that extends all the way over the back side of the truck bed. From there,I RTV some rubber strips under were ever the wood touch the truck bed. Were ya'll have the bolts at that hold down to those rubber thingy,I had installed long eyebolts. From there I do have a plastic covered cable that will pass thru each reel and a lock on each side. Those rod holders last about 5 years in the direct sun.I have to replace a couple of the ones I have now.
