Here's a little bit more info. 21ft boat and nasty seas. Not sure if it was small craft warnings when they launched but it is now! Nope they find them OK.
Don't know what people are thinking when they go out in weather like this. We have been receiving alerts all week about the approaching cold front and they have been forecasting severe weather and rapidly falling temps all over the news for the past 48 hours!
Dunno. Was apparently in Tampa area, and yesterday/last night they figured out they were missing. In SW Florida/Keys, weather/seas were fine yesterday on the gulf. Hope they find/found them, cause pretty ugly up there this afternoon, and getting worse.

thanks for the updated info, that original article was next to useless. they seem to care more about their free agency status and tackle statistics of the players than what type of boat they were in.
who writes that crap?

Seas weren't all that bad yesterday afternoon according to the buoy reports (4 ft) but are currently 13 ft. offshore with winds gusting to 35 kts. It's really rippin out there today.
I used to be stationed in Clearwater as one of the HH-60J pilots. There's a very competent group of individuals there, and I am sure they'll find them.
they're searching 50 miles out of Clearwater Pass. Why would you take a 21' boat 50 miles offshore ??? especially as a cold front is approaching.
I hope they find these guys - and I hope they tell their tale so that other boaters think twice before going far offshore without the right preparation (epirb would have really helped !)

Because all you need to buy (or rent) a 21' boat is a credit card.
A local marina here advertises "boat rental - no experience needed".

Ran a 90 mile round trip yesterday in my 21. Ok in the morning but the wind/waves kicked up in the afternoon pretty good. I'd give yesterday a 5 on the 1-10 pucker scale.
Who said they went out 50 miles, maybe they broke down and are drifting.
I have been out 50 miles in my proline, I want good weather before I do go out that far, I also have an EPRIB with GPS on board as well as having XM weather so I can see what is out there and plot a way around a quick storm if needed.
There was time before all of these big center consoles that people went out in there 21 foot boats all the time and came back safe and sound.
You can get in just as much trouble in a 35 foot CC as you can in a smaller boat if you don't use common sense.
Any idea of boat name, color boat, brand, motor? What were they fishing for? I hope the coast guard put out more details than I have seen here just in case they were seen.
I hope everything works out for these guys. Yesterday was a nice day but the wind was blowing a bit atleast on the east coast of FL. I think the key to any run offshore is to have the proper safety gear. I am not going to judge these guys or their ability as we don't know what occurred. I hope for there safe return.

quote from the article:
"Close said the men were traveling in a boat manufactured by Everglades. At least one of the men was an experienced boater, and relatives provided the Coast Guard with GPS coordinates from previous fishing expeditions."

Hope this turns out ok, but who would go out 50 miles in a 21ft boat with only a short window of good weather ahead of a cold front?
Those who don't know what a weather window is!
It's amazing how many people are so smart behind keyboards. So no one here has ever been offshore when it blew up. Give these guys a break, they went fishing and something went wrong, leave it @ that and say a prayer for them.

What mlaco says. The weather wasn't all that bad there yesterday (see Ludicrous post) and I'm sure they planned to be back well ahead of the bad stuff. Note in that linked article, the USCG guy says seas now are running to fourteen feet in that area. Brrrr.....
