I was down at the skyway in the afternoon, I'm not sure they made it that far out but also think they were in trouble Sat afternoon, nobody would have staid out in that crap all afternoon. Then today the seas were just too much, 12-14 short and breaking I'm sure. I just can't imagine the boat staying upright with or without power and I presume they were without. They do need a miracle especially after this amount of time, your just screwed, you can't anchor they come over the bow, can't drift they come over everywhere.

The NFL minimum salary for a guy with 4-6 years is $595,000. What boggles the mind is why a guy making that much money, who loves to fish 50 miles out, would own a 21' single engine boat. And where's the EPIRB?

Anyway, I hope they're just adrift and upright. If not, it doesn't look good in 60 degree water.

I just hope they're all ok! I hate hearing any story of anyone being lost at sea it really gets to me. Hope everything turns out ok and all prayers are answered...

As for renting boats to anyone I have never agreed with that when I was a kid my dad and I watched a guy acting a fool in the ICW running the boat as fast as he could and turning it as hard as he could like it was some play toy.. There should be some kind of course required before you can rent a boat or something... To many peoples lives are put in danger when one idiot that doesnt know what they are doing rents a boat and goes out amongst other people. The place near my house where they sell boats if I am not mistaking when you buy a boat they have a lake right behind them where they let you put the boat in and give you a safety course on running the boat.. Seems something like that is needed before you can rent one but you would still have people that would act one way in front of the people they are renting it from then act a fool when they are not around the renters.... One of those situations where one person could ruin it for all...

Just hope they find em and they are ok!!!!

What I dont get is why they are guessing the boat is/was 50 miles out. Just because they had numbers from past trips in those areas does not mean they went back with the approaching weather. What are the chances they are much closer in and drifting? No one is on the water due the the shitty seas so being found by a boat passing by would be slim.

Float plan Float plan Float plan. I always leave a general area of where I will be heading. give or take 20 miles. If my plans change I get on the sat phone and change my plans. Let this be a reminder to those of you who are to cheap to purchase a good 406 epirb. Chances are if they had one they would be doing interviews right now on ESPN. Save up and get an epirb if you dont already have one. It truly could save your life and ya can get a used one for a few hundred bucs

I also went out at the same time they did out of Clearwater Pass. I saw them getting bait at the Tri-Pod. Once I got their I grabed my Sabiki rods. Soon they packed up and ran into the horizon. I ran NW to about 25 miles. Seas were 2-3 in the morning then increased to 4-6' in the afternoon. Ay 50 miles seas would have been a steady 6-8. I felt unsafe with my 29' and i packed up and headed home. Saturday was not a day to screw around in.

WTF does what I own have anything to do with what I said? The fact that they are NFL players means that they more than likely don't have much for boating skills and could easily get in trouble. Not saying all NFL or pro sports guys but most of them spend most of their time on their career and training and only go boating once in a while. Thats all I am saying nothing more and nothing less so, lets not make a big deal of it. Strike a nerve?

Team E-glades,
The Coast Guard may want some of your info on them. Wearing Jackets, foul weather gear, what color, see any life jackets, exactly what direction did they run to the horizon at, etc.
You may have some pretty good info there.

Grouper King, you just hit on one of the most difficult aspects of a search and rescue coordinators job, and that is making the correct assumptions about where the search object may be. Often boaters do not tell family members exactly where they are going. It is entirely possible that these guys stuck their nose out the pass and decided not to get beat up by the 2-4 foot seas. 50 miles is a long trip in any 21 foot boat in 2-4's. For all we know they could have turned back in and headed who knows where for an inshore trip or a sightseeing excursion. I'm not that familiar with the area, but if it's like most of FL there are quite a few remote backwater areas. What kind of bait and tackle did they take? There are an endless stream of questions that SAR coordinators need answers for, but just aren't available in most overdue cases.

I haven't pulled the weather for that area, but I think the wind was blowing out of the SSW at first and turned with the passing front. If the boaters were heading out 50 miles, did they make it? Did they break down along the way there or on the way back? The computer systems can pretty accurately model where different kinds of boats would be if it knew exactly where they were when they experienced the problem. Do you plug in a capsized boat, an upright boat or people in the water as search objects?

The size of this search area is going to be huge. More than could adequately be covered by numerous boats and aircraft. This is one of those cases that make coodinators cringe. So many questions, so few solid answers, a huge area, a shift in the wind and seas, heavy wind and seas, lives hang in the balance and very limited physical and human resources to effect the search effort. My prayers for the search team and the families.

There was a good article in the Tampa paper this morning about the guys. Two of them were ex-Bucs players, starting their careers here. The other two guys were ex-members of the USF Bulls college football team.
Corey Smith, the owner of the boat was a local and fished regularly. They had just been out the past weekend and wanted to make a return trip to the same area.
They were described as good blue collar guys who were not flashy and more low key than other players. None of that matters; I too have a sickening feeling right now and would love to hear some good news.

From the CNN story....

The Coast Guard asked anyone with information on the boaters to contact its St. Petersburg, Florida, office at 727-824-7506.

Thanks for the help. In cases like this little details can make a big difference in shrinking the search area. One of my old buddies, Richard Huthinson is a SAR coordinator for Sector Tampa/St Pete. Hutch is VERY good at it.

I was offshore saturday west of everglade city 60 miles, and it was not that bad. started back at 1530 in a 19.6 Pioneer, myby it was worse further north. SE wind with 2' and some 3' seas started pickin up at 1700.
It was worse going out 2 to 4' from SE, but the NOA weather stated it would be south later with 2' sea

I'm friends with Will and his family and have fished and scalloped with him many times. I'm literally shaking while typing this.

I hope to god they're found alive.
