Use a fine blade like a metal cutting blade. I would also use masking tape to help avoid chipping. Good luck!

You can use a fine tooth metal cutting blade, but hopefully your saw allows you to adjust blade speed. Set it almost as slow as it will go and take your time. If you can't set the speed, buy plenty of blades because the 'glass will just about melt them at high speed.

Go to home depot and get a "Remgrit" blade....it's a diamond abrasive in a green & yellow package that runs about $8. You'll just wear the teeth off and chip the glass with anything else.

....sounds like a real good reason to expand your tool collection. Get a RotoZip and you'll have an item that will make holes in anything, doesn't have the physical limitations of jig saws, can cut into sheetrock, metal, wood, etc, and has a wheel attachment that allows you to cut metal, ceramic, etc.

Fine tooth wood/metal blade. But, the key is this: Blue painters tape on the bottom of the jig saw and painters tape on the piece you are cutting. The tape prevents the metal bottom of the jig saw from scratching your boat while cutting and the tape on the piece you are cutting is to prevent chipping of the gel coat.

I had an old boat and did alot of fiberglass work on it and http://www.rotozip.com/Learn/ChoosingRightBit is the way to go.

Be sure to "work smart” http://www.boatbuilding.net/article..../03/07/1313247

Rotozip vs. Fiberglass = many burnt blades and very little progress; They're pretty much useless against anything more substantial than sheetrock, and boy do they make dust. Use the diamond blades recommended above.

I agree withbamaboy. Get the right bit and you'll be amazed how quickly and easily you can make cuts, evenin some pretty tight spots.

I found the solution to the melted tools problem with the Rototzip is to use a 1/8" carbide four flute ball endmill. They last a long time and give you decent control over the cutting path. The grit blades on a jig saw do work, but they can still chip the gelcoat and it is difficult to turn corners with them. I still put blue tape of the surfaqce, even with the Rotozip

With rotozip you can control the depth of your cut. Get a good Disposable Respirator.

when your using the rotozip dont use the tiny sheetrock bits, use the larger diameter carbide tile bits.

problem with the rotozip is if your going into thin glass be carefull, it can go off course if your not holding on and guiding it good.

the circle attachment works GREAT for cutting in speakers too

Well, you can do that with a saber saw also. Put the blade in a vise and break it off to the needed length.

I've used:

Saber saw
Rotozip
Router
Disk saw in a Dremel tool
Hole saw
Rotary rasp in a drill motor
Hand rasp

A dust mask will work and a vacuum cleaner to clean up the mess. Sometimes you can get someone to hold a vacuum cleaner to suck the dust up before it goes everywhere. Long pants and a long sleeved shirt will cut down the itching. Eye protection is a good idea also.

I thought of another question: Would it make a difference if I drilled the corners then used a jig saw from the back side as oppose to the finished (gelcoat) side? My helm drops down so i can access the other side. Just something i was thinking about.

I will add my vote for the rotozip. I just added 8" speakers to replace my 6 1/2" ones. I spent more time rewiring the new speakers than cutting. The rotozip made quick work of the fiberglass.

Only down side is that your ears will be ringing for a while. Maybe add ear protection to the list...
