Default How to transfer boat slip in Chicago ?

Greetings all...new boat owner in Chicago and looking to get a slip in one of the many Chicago harbors, however there is a long wait list. Is it possible to transfer slips ? Or "rent" our boat to a current slip occupant ?

Thanks !

Just call your former Senator and tell him someone else was more fortunate than you and owns a boat slip...

They do have transient slips but have a limit on the time you can stay. I would suggest going north a bit and check out Winthrop Harbor, Waukegan, or over the boarder into Kenosha, WI or Racine, WI. I think the prices much are better there also.

I used to have a boat in the Chicago harbor system. If I remember correctly, you cannot transfer or lease/rent slips from individuals. Monroe harbor usually has open moorings availble for the season, and allows you to get on the transfer list which is much shorter than the regular waiting list. Additionally, if things are still the same, the slips are broken down by length (5 foot increments), for example, my boat is 32 feet long; I had my boat on a mooring and was offered a 40 foot slip. I had to pay for all 40 feet, this got to be too expensive so I trailer now. You can also try some of the condo buildings on the Chicago River. Some of them have private slips, maybe you can lease/rent from one of those owners. The Calumet river has a couple of Marinas also, but I'm not at all familiar whith them. Lastly, I launch out of waukegan now, as mentioned already, Waukegan has slips available as does Northpoint marina in Winthrop Harbor IL.

When was the last time you checked? Check again.

The reason I say that is because I have been trying to get into Point Judith for years. I've been checking the marinas every year, and I have been quite literally laughed at. The waiting lists were so long they wouldn't even put my name on one.

When I was at the Providence boat show last weekend, I passed a booth for one of the nicer Marinas. I joking said "this is a silly question, but do you have any open slips?".

Guess what?

They had multiple open slips. I've got a 36 foot slip reserved and paid for. Not cheap, but mine-mine-mine.

Ask again. You might find that the economy has opened a few spots up.

Well, if you do need to go North until you get a slip in Chicago, Waukegan Harbor has a Metra train station a block away. So you can take the train from Chicago right to Waukegan Harbor, stay the weekend and go home on Sunday evening on the train with no hassle and no parking issues. The slips are around $500.00 per year cheaper there too.

I know it might be a stupid question, but Belmont Harbor? Yeah, go ahead...

Try Michigan City, IN or New Buffalo, MI. The beaches there are beautiful, the water is much cleaner and warmer, and the costs are substantially less.
