Default FL Homemade title for a boat ? How ? where? Please help!!!!

I just got a project boat from a friend. Its a Scarab looking boat, 32' but its unfinished by the manufacturer (who ever it was, dont know). He bought a triple outboard bracket and is giving me the hull and bracket just to get it out of his yard.

needs the floor and upper cap for the hull, No title, just a bill of sale from him.

He got it from another friend that use to do fiberglass work, and was paid with the hull.

Long story short, dont know brand or year for this half boat.

I would like to get it titled as a "Custom Made" or "homemade" , but am about to buy a triple axle trailer just to get it to my house and I dont want to throw away my money on a trailer if I cant get this thing titled.

Does anyone know what the process is to get a 32' custom project titled in Florida? Does this boat sounds like it qualifies to get a homemade title?

Please help, any info will be greatly appreciated...

DO NOT SPEND ANY MONEY YET!! I used to be a State Officer and did title investigation in Florida. If you are rebuilding a hull you must be able to show paperwork where it came from and that you legally own it.... check with your local FWC, I think you will find what you want to do is impossible without any paperwork... Good Luck

You will have to have some sort of paperwork showing that the hull was an unfinished hull from a manufacturer.. The reason for this is because it keeps people from using stolen boats that have been gutted and the hull numbers removed... Getting something registered Homemade is NOT easy unless you have all the paperwork, I am not saying its impossible but with not knowing even the builder of the hull, I doubt you will much success. Good Luck with your endevour, I mean that sincerely..

You are going to have to have a trailer to take it to the local FWC office for inspection--unless you know an officer who will come to where the boat is and determines if it qualifies.

I hope that you are able to get this done with as little difficulty as possible.

I do not "know" that much in this area of expertise, but I am curious about 1 thing. Is there a HIN on the hull?

The reason I ask is that we had a custom boat made for us some time ago. It was a 35' boat that was started by the original builder and then was finished some years later by a different builder. The hull had been laid by the original builder and sat in the mold for several years. we struck our dealer with the new builder who bought the molds and we built on that hull.

The HIN was imprinted on the hull while it was in the mold. So all paperwork that we had with the boat said it was a 1981 and not a 1986 when the boat was actually completed. If your hull is the same way then perhaps the HIN can be decoded and it may tell who the manufacturer was. Or the HIN can be checked against a datatbase of reported thefts - if it comes clean and you can document that - as well as have it inspected, provide affidavits of the parties involved (that gave you the boat, etc) then you mat be able to get it titled. Just lay it all out for the state inspector and be completely cooperative. I agree with previous posters though - try to do this before you spend bunch of money on this project.

Hey thanks for all the great help and information with this. I will see if I can actually get it titled first. No vins on this boat anywhere. Sounds like a real PITA but I will try before I spend a dime, I already invested lots of time on it.

Thanks again
