Default Key West Stealth vs Hewes RF 16

I am looking to purchase a used flats boat and was looking at the KW Stealth and the Hewes Redfisher 16. Does anyone have experience with both of those to make a comparison? I will need to be able to pole in skinny water as well as deal with some chop getting back and forth. Thanks.

Do you have any info on the particular boat you want to buy? Pictures etc?

I am looking at the following Hewes http://boatstore.floridasportsman.co...lat&1237305771

A friend of mine owns a Key West dealership and he is scouting for a used Stealth. Nothing physical to compare yet but so far the voting has been overwhelming in favor of the Hewed.

Personally I think that is WAY HIGH for that boat. Its a 2005 so its 4 years old. I wouldn't offer more than 12K for it. And even at that I personally think that is high. Just look at the used market anywhere within 150 miles of your area and see whats available in that type of boat for 10K and see what you come up with

Looking at these two hulls before deciding on an 18 maverick, I remember the real world draft on the key west was 12 inches or so which was a surprise when looking at the style of boat and hull. My thinking in the decision was .. if I the boat's gonna draft that much I may as well get a little bigger boat for storage and livewell capacity. The hewes RF is a sweet little boat...could not find one with a 4 stroke at a reasonable price when I was looking.
In s. florida craigslist such as fort myers, sarasota, miami sections there seems to be several for sale now...suggest checking there. hope this helps.

The stealth is bigger and will probably feel more stable with other anglers on board. The Hewes will ride better (trim tabs are your friend), is better built (compare wiring, rigging, etc), will float a bit shallower. I'm not sure if the cockpit of the stealth is self-bailing or not (I think it drains to the bilge) whereas the Hewes is self-bailing. The Hewes has higher free board for and aft which means a bit more "windage" when poling/trolling motoring but also means its better suited for open water running. I was in the same dilema as you back in 2001 and ended up buying a 16' Hewes and don't regret it one bit... I've since sold it to a guy on this site and he's still fishing it down in GA. I'd give the nod to the Hewes unless you've found a GREAT deal on the stealth. Both are good boats... just different strokes for different folks. As you know, it's the best buyers market we've had in years so make sure you are getting a good deal no matter what you decide on. Good luck in your search.

No doubt. People need to start lowering their expectations on these USED boats. Depreciation starts when you take it off the lot...

The Stealth also has a self bailing cockpit. Having more freeboard on a flats boat would be, in my opinion, defeating some of the purpose of a flats boat. Also, as far as the hewes being built better in terms of rigging and wiring, there is nothing glaringly wrong with the wiring in a Key West over any other quality boat. The wiring setups are outsourced and come back as nice neat waterproof wiring harnesses coupled with quality switches and relays and fuse blocks, just like you would find in any other quality modern boat. The rigging will be just as good any other boat deemed a quality boat, and the build quality is good if not better than most with no wood (klegecell), foam filled cores, and a more than supportive stringer system. 10yr hull warranty as well. The Stealth will give you what you're looking for in a flats boat at an undoubtedly lower price than the Hewes with similiar setups (ie: year of boat/motor, motor size, w/ trailer).

I had a Stealth for about 5 years. Loved the boat. It ran great (it does need trim tabs) and handled a chop surprisingly well. You could use the tabs to drop the bow and just run through it without getting beat to death. I used it in Mosquito Lagoon and chased Redfish with it. It poled very straight with little effort. The boat is very stabile. I and my buddy (both of us are 6' and around 225) could both be on the same side without it even feeling like it was getting tippy. The gunnels are wide, I could walk all the way around the boat and never have to watch my footing. It would not float as shallow as some boats and the lagoon demands a shallow boat, but I never had a problem with it. Put a jack plate on it and tab's. You will be very happy with it.

Thanks to all for the information. I am leaning towards the Hewes RF. Now the fun part of finding the right used boat at the right price.

Just bought a 1994 Stealth. Anyone know of any good sites, besides THT, that aims at the Stealth owner primarily?

You can try the keywestboatsforum. Little bit of everything there. Lots of knowledge from the boat builders.

I was in the same boat as you and ultimately decided on the hewes. I was not as selective as you at first. I looked at all flats but ultimately decided to buy based on price and condition for what was in my area. That turned out to be a hewes.
And by the way, kuhlmann is way off base with his assessment of flats boat values, at least in Florida. Depending on the condition, 12k is a great price for a 2004 hewes, or just about any year hewes. If you want to spend only 10 k, you can, but it will be someone's junk, high hours, beaten up, etc.
