I own a 2006 38 Luhrs with the IPS system-AWESOME!
The boat cruises at 29 knots, tops at 34.
Burns 30 gallons per hours at cruise and 3 GPH at 7 knot troll.
Quiet, no smoke.
Definitely the future of boating.
REALLY like the sheer line.
Guess the IPS gives a big advantage in being able to get the motors in (and out!) after the house is built. That'll be a big + when it comes to overhaul time.
'Course, only time will prove the reliability of the IPS drive system. It's still an underwater gearcase with a bunch of seals. Ten years from now, we'll know.
I am sure American Custom Yachts, in Stuart, would be more than happy to do a 45 with Pods, etc. Let me know if interested I have a great contact there. Craig970h@aol.com
awesome stuff Freedom BW
would be interesting to know how it goes with the bending in tight turns
many IPS problems related to flybridge med style boats has been for too much leaning inside in tight turning at speed which has to relates in a change to a medium or flat vee minus fifteen degrees deadrise aft

Are hulls bending because of right angle pressure of ips drive? Did not know this. I have not driven one yet or even been on one yet. Have only been in boat yards with a couple out of the water so far? Whats bending? In USA we refer to lightly built hulls {twisting} when moving but not failing totally?
I mean a lot of angle leaning inside to the curve when going into tight turns, which is dangerous for the guest on top when doing this and may be also for the helmsman
the inside drive in turns exterts a lot of pressure due to its position related with the hull vee
Volvo is sudjesting a moderate vee angle from midship to aft inorder to result in safer turning underway and less bending movement during tight turns
for example the Beneteau 12 Antares, a euro built flybridge motor cruiser available with both IPS and shafts has a total different hull shape vee, with the IPS having a flatter vee from midship to aft
sport cruisers or open boats dont have any of these problems as there is no one on top, altough a type of hull shape to take better advatange of the IPS system innovation is also recommended
ZF Zeus has no problem too as is more suitable to actual hulls being fixed in a flat tunnel position, and the propeller exterting a similar pressure to what a shaft and propeller would do....
I think North Carolina Sport Fishers having most of them a flat vee aft will have the least of this problem I think
edited for Bly...

I understand now. Its an atlantic ocean between thing?
We call that leaning here? If a boat leans in on the turn it is usually not a problem? atleast til IPS that I havent had the chance to experience? If it is leaning out or away? That is scarry to me. I have experienced that and dont like it. If a cat turns hard without leaning in or out at all! That even takes some getting used to?
We ran the boat today for the first time. She had all furniture, appliances, granite, electronics, curtains, riggers, half fuel, and 20 PEOPLE. Even though the governors held the motors back because she was significantly underpropped, she exceeded 42 knots. While software to figure fuel burn wasn't working, her performance exceeds predictions....so fuel economy should exceed predictions...50 gph @ 30 knots loaded. It will be interesting to see how much performance improves with larger wheels, but it should be significant. Her performance, running attitude, balance, stability in turns (see comments in this thread), and handling far exceeded our most optimistic hopes. It was a great day. We'll post pictures soon.
I think Paul Spencer has the most Custom sportfish IPS boats in the water right now, several 43 exp's. He has a 49 express with the bigger engines getting splashed this fall which is even nicer. He has a 57 Convertible IPS that is in the shed now. The efficiency and ride of these is incredible. Looks like builders are waiting for Volvo to make bigger powerplants so they can build bigger rigs.

Why would you step on freedom here! Spencer builds a fine boat but he is no more the answer to all then you are! Freedom had the guts to show this revolutionary drive system even before the boat was splashed. That takes balls! Throwing spencers name in here with the words that you used, only shows rudeness.

Taking risks can yield substantial rewards. It looks like you nailed it - congrats, continue to post up #s as you get them. I for one am VERY interested in the improving efficiencies and innovations of sportfishers.... and this boat is on the cutting edge
Now if you could beat everyone on price, you would own the market!!!!!
What are some brand of ~45' Sportfisher convertible that sports Volvo IPS drives or similar drives? I think cummins/merc also make a similar drives too - can't remember the name?
There is a 60' Hatteras test boat at Cummins in Charleston that has 4 600hp cummins pod drive diesels.
