What are the mini bimini tops on the front of a center console boat called?
i want to get one of those "mini bimini" tops that go in the front of a center console boat, but i can't find one. This would be used to provide a place with extra shade in the front of the boat for the kids to hang out under. The ones I have seen look like a rectangular parachute somehow mounted in the very front, not much bigger than a beach umbrella. I have seen several of them in pictures, but i don't know what to call them or where to get one.

Maybe I thought they were for another purpose...would these be good for just shade, or are they primarily designed for "spray dodging", or maybe both?!

Both, and they can be used underway. Note the unit Signman linked is a nice piece, but it's only for use when anchored, or maybe very slow going.

Call Ben at Sheaffer boats, Mike Manning at Dorado, Robbie at Andros, or the guys at Gause. All of these custom builders offer spray/bow dodgers on thier boats. All are very high quality and are made to be used while running. DO NOT go cheap on these. Poor quality will cost you more in the end. They are for blocking spray and/or just sun. Makes the boat more "family friendly". I've taken many a nap under one . As for the name, I've heard them called both.

My boat has the hardware and frame already installed for a spray dodger from a previous owner. I've never had any canvas work done before. Can anyone give me an idea as to what this might cost.

Size of the item, type of material and complexity (number of pieces to make, amount of stitching, hardware points, etc.) are the normal governing factors for cost. Also, you should always get a couple of estimates; canvas shops tend to be very individual places, and prices will vary. If you mean for your 18 Wellcraft, I'll go out on a limb and say 250-300 for a small one, around 500 for a larger one, in Sunbrella.

I know this isn't a "Dodger", but I have a center console with a casting platfom on the bow which this beach tent would fit on. Anchor up and sleep for a couple hours - avoid the bugs. The front section zips up to enclose the tent, with screened windows... I thought it was pretty cool. Price is right and just roll it up and get back to fishing!
