Random Quote: Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.
I am thinking of selling my 2006 Whaler Outrage 190 and replacing it with a 2002 Grady White Fisherman 222. I fish Western Long Island Sound with fly rods and light spinning tackle - artificials only. Anyone out there have any comments on this? I am mostly interested in a smoother ride when the wind and waves are up. Going from the Westchester shore to the Long Island shore is a bit bone wrenching in the Outrage. I have a Verado 135, which has been great- quiet and powerful and efficient. The Grady I am looking at has a 2008 Yamaha 225 4 stroke, which is certainly well recommended by many. It has only 34 hours!
The price differential between the two boats is not that dramatic.
Any thoughts would be very welcome.
Thanks.
Fred
I owned a 222 for 5 years and it is a great boat, I kind of regret every selling the boat. The boat rides great and can handle the chop very well. Good luck.
I can't compare your Whaler, never rode a newer 22. I have run a newer SV2 Grady 22, both the Tournament and Seafarer and was impressed. I had an older 22 Grady which you would need to go a lot slower in than the SV2 hull.
Go for a ride!!!!
I have owned 2 GW222 over the past ten years-- It will be a great step up from a 19 outrage-- IF you are casting artificials/ flies, the ttop can get in the way--On really big fish (tunas) the step up bow area was quite a pain in the ass--although it works great for casting to the small guys--
i have spent a lot of time on the 22 tournament. i was always impressed with the ride. it will be wet compared to your whaler but it rides really well. we really beat the crap out of that boat using it mostly for offshore (long way out of Va.) but it took the beating well.
I owned and fished a GW 222 for 4 years and can say you'll love it. I also owned a BW 18' outrage (1986), which was also nice, but the Grady was much better.

I have fished and cruised many times in a Grady Fisherman 222 my brother owned one and its a great boat. It's a lot more boat than your 19 Outrage for offshore water. The 225 Yamaha Four Stroke its a great engine
