Default Tandem or Tri Axle Trailer

I have an option of either going with a tandem or tri axle trailer on next boat. What difference is there in hauling a tri axle over a tandem axle as far as manuverability goes?

Toatl weight of boat empty is 6000-6500 pounds.

Most bridges in MI charge per axle.

The more axles, the harder to turn a trailer, and more tire scrubbing

One some boats a tri-axle looks like overkill . . . its your choice

Great Laker,
How often & length of trip do you tow? I was in your shoes
last fall and went with the tri. Great peice of mind on a long
trip.

To give you a rough idea on weight comparison,
I tow my Regulator 26 on a tri-axle and the boat weighs
about 5100lbs dry.

According to my dealer, the weight of the boat would be displaced alot more on a tri axle over a tandem. He also mentioned the boat would sit lower on a tri axle.

We do quite a bit of towing and our roads are usually not in the best of shape. Potholes and what not.

Usual trip is at least 100 miles one way to get to the Lake Huron side. 240 miles one way to the Lk. Michigan side. We trailer roughly 2500-3000 miles per season.

You state the empty weigh, but what would be the max loaded weigh?

I went through this last year and decided to go with a tri-axle for a 26' Hydra-Sports. I was very happy with my choice. People talk about handling and scrubbing as negatives on tri-axles. I didn't see that to be much of a problem for me, especially when the turning radius of my Super Duty is about 40 acres anyways. That tri-axle rode really sweet down the highway.

You probably want to err on the side of having plenty of trailer rather than maybe not enough.
