Re: Buy the book great read - Only In America - 6100 miles in a Montauk
Well some of us in the Northeast have to suffer through the winter, but I am luckier then some and do get to use my second house down in Port Charlotte for a long weekend of fishing a few times during the winter. Some day I'll be a full time Florida resident, but then I guess I would miss the NJ summers and striper fishing.

I remember when these guys did this trip back in 1987 I think. Trailer Boats or WaterSki magazine did a write-up in their magazine about it. Did the trip in like 3-4 months. My son was about 3 years old and I thought this would be a very unique way to see parts of this country in a way that very few people have. My plan was to take the summer off after my son graduated and make this trip together. Started planning and saving for several years. My son graduated but the trip never materialized although the idea has never died. May not happen til after I retire but to this day, I still hope to make it. Until then, I'll just have to buy the book.

Two friends and I where going to do the same trip(closed loop)in '74 on an Ericson 27 sailboat, but getting 3-24 year guysto commit the time(planned on 8 months)killed the project. Can't imagine doing it in a totally open boat.

I owned a Montauk a while ago. You can slow that boat down to a crawl and still stay on plane. Those who require back surgery after a ride on a Montauk usually drove too fast.
One of the few boats you can buy, use for 10 years and make money.

Don't let those plans fade away. My Dad and I had always planned to do a canoe trip down the Delaware River starting around the Water Gap and coming down to New Hope, PA. We never did get to do that trip, Dad's gone now, and I regret it like he|| when I think about it.

Thank you for the post and I'm happy to hear you enjoyed the read. For those who are wondering: I still have all my teeth, backs a little messed up, but not from Whalering. There is one thing I contribute to spending countless hours boating around in 17-foot open bow boat, the hair, completely gone.
I still have the boat, as a matter of fact my six year old son's favorite thing to do is jump aboard and head to Catalina Island.
A small boat is a great way to circumnavigate the eastern US. I highly recommend it.
Thanks for the thread, just discovered it when someone who purchased the book told me where he found out about the story.

John,
Welcome to the forum. I remember when you guys made that trip and I read about it in the magazine. Like I said before, I had hoped to make that same trip when my son graduated from high school but it didn't materialize. Maybe one day, what a way to see the country the way very few people ever will. Hats off to you and your buddies, will have to buy the book soon.

In the early 80's I took a 17' montauk from the Fire Island Inlet to Montauk, Block Island, Newport, back through the Sound and East River to Fire Island. I started with my father and a friend, but my father got so freaked out he got off in Newport and took the train home, and never set foot in the boat again. I used the same boat raking for clams in the Great South Bay, winter and summer, for about 5 years. It was the best boat I've ever been on, and still regret selling it.
