My wife and I are thinking of attending this years Atlantic City boat show. We want to stay somewhere classy and not trashy. It will be my wife's birthday weekend and I want to take her some place nice.
I was considering the Trump Taj Mahal. We are not big gamblers or high rollers so I am not sure about it.
Any recommendations? Any place to avoid?

i haven't stayed overnight in AC so i can't help on room specifics. logistically, if you stay on the boardwalk you can easily bounce from hotel to hotel to catch different shows, restaurants, casinos etc. with just a stroll. the hotel across from the convention center is a bit of a walk from the boardwalk (i think it's a sheraton or marriott). the marina is too far away. if you stick with the big name casinos, i think you will do ok.
Capt.Matt, why don't you give Harrahs a try. We've (I work in the construction field) just this past summer finished a 3 year renovation and addition project there. We built a new hotel tower,a domed pool/health club/sauna,and a new seafood buffet like no other!Treat your wife to the Red Door Spa @ poolside she'll love every minute.
I live right near Atlantic City and work in the city. If you want somewhere classy and nice Harrah's just built a new tower and is the newest casino to date that is opened. Harrahs is linked (owned) to other casinos such as Bally's and Caesars which they offer a free shuttle between all their casinos. Ceasars is within walkin distance to the Convention center 3 blocks and there's lots of shopping in between the convention center and Ceasars. It is also safe to walk. Alot of the casinos on the boardwalk are the original and older ones so they are a little dated. The casinos such as The Borgata very nice and Harrah's are the newest and nicest. harrah's has a huge indoor pool with a dome that has cabanas poolside that is really something unique that sets it apart from all the other casinos. Hope this helps let me know if you need any more info. All the casinos are also running specials as they are having a tough time getting people to come.
you're not gamblers but are you eaters or shoppers?
the trump taj mahal i am guessing is mediocre. there is a good indian food restaurant in there, though.
if you want an upscale place to stay, the previously mentioned Borgata is good. i haven't seen it, but the Harrah's tower should be great, too.
i'm not sure about Harrah's, but the Borgata has quite a few good restaurants inside; you can also toss a coin at the slots while checking out the scantily clad hostesses. from both you will need to take public transportation to the convention center, but it's not far.
if you want to stay within walking distance of the convention center, then you stay at the Sheraton which is right there. then you can walk to the outlet shops located along "The Walk". there are a few restaurants around there, too. or... you can stay near Caesar's and be near "The Pier" which is an indoor mall with nice shops and a pretty decent restaurant food court upstairs. Caesar's is about 4-5 long city blocks to walk to the convention center.
borgata--upscale hotel, casino w/cocktail waitresses, good restaurants; public transportation to boat show
harrahs--upscale hotel, not familiar with rest; pt to boat show
sheraton--mediocre hotel; right at convention center; walk to outlet stores/restaurants
caesars--mediocre hotel; casino; indoor upscale shops/restaurants; healthy walk to boat show
I'm assuming you mean the Boat Show in February? If so and you want easy access to the boat show which is all indoors at the Convention Center stay at the Sheraton at the Convention Center. You have direct access to ths show and never have to go outside. I stay in AC a lot and will be at the show this year. If you want a casino stay at the Borgata. It's not on the boardwalk but in February who cares. You can walk if it's a decent day to the convention center or a quick cab ride. It would be a 10 minute walk to the boardwalk hotels if you wanted to go down there. Personally I think most of the boardwalk hotels suck and I have stayed in most of them. I now always stay at the Borgata. You will love it.
I've stayed at the Taj and the Borgata while visiting the boat show over the last few years. The Borgata is a nice place and closer to the show but, will cost you a chunk of change. The Taj was decent and also relatively close to the show. It's not as expensive and usually you can pick up a room upgrade at check in. The Taj is located better amongst the other casinos and is on the boardwalk where as the Borgata is a fair distance away from the strip. If I were doing this year I would stay at the Taj. Hope this helps.
Harrahs and Borgota are very nice. The pool at Harrahs is like a little tropical paradise inside. Ceasers puts you in the middle of the Boardwalk and you can walk to everything including the show. I wouldn't stay at any Trump properties (except the state marina). They're all showing their age.
Borgota is the place to stay, the Homestead Rest. the place to eat, and they have a decent bar with live band that plays till at least 2? (By the way, the barmaids are as in hot!!)
My parents stayed at the Borgota and had a problem mentioned at check out that they should have maintenance look at the room as it appeared to have some mold spot on the ceiling in the bathroom. My parents were not complaining or looking for anything, just passing it on so they maintenance crew can take care of any problems before it got worse. They had a great time and said the place was fantastic. Needless to say, a week later they get a letter from the hotel appologizing for the 'mold' and received a free 2 night stay. By the way, my parents spend maybe $20 in slots the 3 times they have been to AC in the past 15 years, so the Borgota was not looking to bring back a high roller, just providing good customer service.
